We seem to be always searching for outlets in hotel rooms, to plug in cell phones to recharge, the digital camera to recharge, my hair dryer (I like my own best) and there are never enough. When we arrived there this month my DH had thought of bringing a power strip with him for these plug in items. It worked great for our cell phones each night and thought I would share his good idea.... :sunny:

I purchased a 6ft extension cord with 3 outlets at Dollar Tree, because I had read that sometimes the outlets can be out of reach from table tops when plugging in those things that need electricity. I'm now rethinking the regular cord and it's ability to handle the large plugs for the cell phone and rechargeable battery charger. Even though it's sure to take up less room in a suitcase, I'm concerned how safe it might be compared to a strip with a switch when we are not in the room.

We do the power strip thing. It's a lifesaver. It makes it much easier to have all the stuff sort of in one "area" rather than having all those rechargers plugged in every outlet all over the room. You're a lot less likely to forget to pack them too, if they are all together.

We never used it when we were out of the room, and it was a good power strip. So many outlets as someone said are out of reach it was a real help. The large plugs for cell phones and the camera fit in it fine.

That's a great idea, and it can also protect your electronics against spikes and surges if you get a power strip that has surge protection built in.

I'm always a little nervous about plugging in my cell phone, camera batter charger, laptop, and other electronics directly into a wall outlet, particularly in central Florida where lightning is both common and powerful.

Yes we had one that was a surge protector too, and as you said Florida power is often affected by all those storms and lightening hits. We will certainly carry one with us from now on.... :sunny:

I never used the power strip I brought on my trip last October. I was worried because we had four adults in a suite at Shades of Green, all with cell phones that needed charging. We didn't use the power strip at all - plenty of outlets. But that might not be true for a regular hotel room (non-suite). It would be a pain to have to unplug various appliances (TV, lamps, etc.) to recharge your cell phone, plug in a laptop, etc.

I say bring one - it won't take up much room and it would be better to have it (and not use it) than to wish you'd brought one.

That is a great tip. I'll be doing that on our next trip. I'm going to go ahead and get one and put it with my travel stuff. Thanks.

Business travellers often carry them, especially if they have a lot of electronic equipment to use for presentations. Even better than a power strip is a PowerSquid which can handle lots of power bricks; though they can get a bit heavy. http://www.powersquid.net/

If you want to make friends in an airport, pack a short extension cord with multiple taps, or even just a 3-tap adapter. Accessible power outlets are scarcer than hen's teeth in the airside public areas of most airports.

This is one of the BEST ideas EVER ON THESE BOARDS! :thumbsup2

I brought one last fall and it was the best thing ever! It was so nice to be able to plug everything in one spot and have all of the outlets that strips offer!

We take a power strip with us every time we go because we were having all those same problems. That's a great idea for sure. It solves alot of problems.

I pack a power strip w/surge protection, also. Depending on how many family members are along with us, we have a minimum of 3 cameras & 2 cells--3 this next trip--
We didn't have to use it at OKW, but we did use it at POP & CBR--just seemed there weren't enough convenient outlets in those locations.
At OKW we were able to put all the electronics on the 'sideboard'--which for us was out of the way & very convenient-I do like having all cameras, cells, laptops in one area & do like the surge protection. At HHI we charged everything on the kitchen island or on the counter nearest the dining table.

We did the same thing for our trip last month....plugged the power strip right in at CBR. It got a lot of use!

We always take a power strip with us, and when we get home, it stays in the suitcase, it never comes out, this way we won't forget it. Buy using this is the hotel room, it make it much easier to have all your re-chargeables in one area of the room.
