DH is convinced that Epcot is making him sick and he has now written Disney a letter...notice the "reply" I have sent back to him on Disney's behalf! LOL

Cast Member,
My wife and I were recent guests at WDW during the week of May 8th - 12th. We stayed at Saratoga Springs and are Vacation Club members. We always have a wonderful time when we vacation at your resort, but I have a concern that you may or not be able to answer. The last three trips down to your resort I have returned with an upper respitory infection. We vacationed in the first of February 2005 and stayed at The Beach Club Villas, February 2006 we again stayed at the Beach Club Villas, and our most recent trip was May 2006 we stayed at Saratoga Springs. Each time I visit EPCOT in the World Showcase area for dinner, I start to get a sore throat during or after dinner and then begin to get sinus pressure later in the trip, and when I return home, I have to see a doctor and get an antibiotic to clear it up. The only common thing I can find is that it seems to happen at the World Showcase area of EPCOT and after we have dinner there. We have tried three different restaurants, Le Cellar, Restaurant Marrakesh and the Rose and Crown, and I get the same results from all of them. Have you had any other guests complain of similar symptoms?

Your comments would be appreciated and hopefully you can be of some assistance in helping us find the cause of this. Thank you!

Here is my response...

Dear Mr. Notmyname,

This is very common problem guests have when visiting the World Showcase at Epcot. The only known cure available is to continue to visit Walt Disney World to help build up your immune system. Recent studies have shown that this could possibly be a side effect of another common disease amongst Vacation Club members called Add-onitis. The only known treatment to date is the purchase of additional Vacation Club points at your favorite resort. At this time Add-onitis is incurable and even though a vaccine has been invented, it has not tested well in clinical studies. Please contact your Guide for additional information.

Sincerely,

Walt Disney World Guest Relations

Any time people go where crowds are, there is an increased chance of getting sick, esp during cold and flu season which is more like Oct to May in FL and year round in central to south FL. I bet they have a canned answer to this issue. It's hard to imagine someone formally complaining about it though as it's simply common sense. BTW, family reunions and funerals are even riskier to one becoming ill I'm told.

That's what makes it so funny. What can I say he's nuts.

Not only the crowd issue, but I think the airports and planes are horrendous for germ exposure. People could prevent more URIs and gastric disorders if they'd wash their hands frequently and well. Have you ever noticed just HOW MANY people use the restrooms and leave without washing their hands? Then they're out there touching the doorknobs and bus railings that you do too!

I love the reply you wrote to your DH......I hope he has a sense of humor as good as yours.

We all have our little quirks, of which we should be entitled up to a point.

Well, it is funny.

Actually I read a post by a Europe travel writer who blames his "Europe" colds on stress in the few days before his trip. His trick is to MAKE himself get everything done a few days early so he gets a good nights sleep the nights prior to going and that seems to fix it.

I ALWAYS get sick at Disney, and have used all the hospital and clinic walk-in services, and I am beginning to think the gerrms are waiting for me at the airport! :teeth: I have had food poisoning, the flu, respiratory infections, pneumonia, UTI, eye infection, swimmer's ear, sciatica, and once I fell and managed to tear some muscles around my ribcage. Tell your DH that he is not alone in his suffering. Maybe it's a communist plot... pirate:

DW says she got sick at chefs de france (sore throat and cold symptoms)... She didn't blame Epcot but it sure is funny how she seems to get sick at WDW also.

Perhaps with the recent events at M:S and the sickness EPCOT should stand for :

Experimental Population Control Of Tomorrow ;)

Thanks for sharing this. DW and I got a good laugh out of it. What a way to start the day!

Dr. Pluto Here

I wonder if it is really an "infection." It sounds to me like your DH may have allergies. Does he take allergy medicine at home? I see that you are 1000+ miles away. Would that be from the north? If so, I could see where coming in from the just emerging north to the full bloom of the WS would set someones allergies off the chart. See your Dr. for some Allegra before the next trip and start that before you come. Maybe that will help.

Hate to increase the laughing rate here...but I got a horrible cold, beginning with a sore throat, after eating at Chef de France two weeks ago. hmmmm

I remember it clearly...and told my DH it was going to be a bad cold because I could "feel" it starting. It was day 4 of our trip, and I was fine before that- and yes, I wash my hands VERY frequently and carry liquid wash with me in the parks because of the handrails, etc.

But it is curious... :confused3

I think this guy could be onto something. Stress always does me in. One of us gets sick each and every WDW trip. Our neighbor, who is a nurse, told us to try eating plenty of yogurt before we go. Something about neutralizing the immune system to the strains of air born bacteria that are different from what we are used to everyday.

"Dr." Pluto - you may be right about allergies. A certain mold spore is high in Florida during the winter months. Any time we go between late Nov. and Feb., my nose starts running and I start sneezing the minute we get off the plane. (I bring Claritin.) Any other time, no problem.

DisFlan

I guess I'm as prone as OP's DH...I always seem to get sick on the third day of our trip to WDW (not the first or second day -- always the third!). I have no idea why, but it always starts in the middle of the night and it lasts about 24 hours. I experience flu-like symptoms and it goes away as quick as it comes. I'm beginning to think it's self-inflicted anxiety over preparation for the trip. Perhaps I should drink heavily over the first two days (I may still get sick, but maybe I won't mind as much!) :lmao:

I would be willing to potentially expose myself to this dreadful epidemic and be an experimental guinea pig, if the funding would be provided. All in the name of Science of course! :teeth:

You are sounding EXACTLY like my DW :rotfl2: Your experience and response was exactly how and almost to the date when she told me (about 2 weeks ago for us also)

Another simularity is in your Sig you say 5/06 (3rd Honeymoon).... Funny enough 5/06 is our 3rd Anniversary. Very odd :thumbsup2
