1. I don't believe this show is on TV - even on a subscription channel (Showtime). :confused3

2. I don't believe that Showtime thinks there is a larger audience for a show about a serial killer who kills serial killers than there was for: HUFF or DEAD LIKE ME. :confused3

3. I don't believe they actually show you the "good guy" (I'm thinking the ultimate anti-hero) torturing and killing his victims. :sad2:

4. I don't believe this show is on TV. :confused3

5. I don't believe I am hooked. :smokin:

Anyone??? :listen:

I tivoed this last night ... I'll let you know if it hooks me too. The concept is bizarre but fascinating. Was it grisly?

Hey, friend.

Yeah, it was grisly, and I am not big on grisly!

Actually, I adore mysteries of all sorts, but always read through the bloody parts very quickly.

Clearly the creators (and Showtime) are thinking that this sort of behavior in an anithero will be accepted because of who his victims are, but I'm afraid I'm the sort of sap who routes for the bad guys on L & O! I sure did choose the right profession, eh?

So, really, I'm not down with torturing anyone, no matter how horrendous they are. Somehow I still manage to connect with their basic humanity.

Still, here I am wathcing it and it is, of course, extremely well done! And I AM a sucker for that.

Please tell us what you think!

But, now watch it, and tell us what you think!!!

as soon as my wife leaves the room--if I get caught watching another "guilty pleasure" tv show, I will be in the dog house, buddy.

Let's just hope she doesn't see the show and get any ideas :lmao:

Oh, I hear you, that's why I watched it WITH my partner - so she didn't think I was getting any ideas - or just really, really weird! pirate:

But now, having indulged in this guilty pleasure :guilty:, I feel soooo ALONE!!! I mean it's not even getting any time on the Community Board!

Penny, have you guys watched it yet???

It's funny -- totally love Weeds (yes -- my misspent youth is showing and I'd probably be just like these poor clueless aberrent boomers if I had more money and opportunity...), The Sopranos (totally groovy food porn -- those gangsta's know how to EAT!), Huff (man was seriously depressed but he kept on keepin' on), and Deadwood (who knew those old cowboys were such potty mouths!?!?!) but I'm leaving this one alone... just a little too uncomfortable with the IDEA of a serial killer as a protagonist. Like Crime and Punishment or The Stranger, the premise is just a little too existential for me.
I know. I know. I'm drawing this line in the sand sight unseen. Somebody tell me if I'm full of beans here -- moral absolutism is a surprising, new thing to pop up for me now at this late date. Is this the first stop on the train to PhyllisShafleyville??? :confused3 LOL -- Try as I might, I CANNOT spell that woman's name right

Yes, exactly, I am totally with you, that's why I'm asking for a little conversation (and thank you for responding).

My issues might be slightly different - for example, I'm not OK with the seeming premise that there is anyone who "deserves" to be tortured and killed (and, yes, I know many would disagree), no matter how heinous their crimes. That seems to be the way we're suppossed to be OK with this guy - at least enough to watch it. But that doesn't do it for me.

What's hooked me is that I am always intrigued by what makes people tick and this guy, played by one of my favorite actors - Michael C. Hall (from Six Feet Under), is a classic sociopath, with a redemptive twist. Apparently he was already damaged before his foster family took him in (he can't even remember anything before), but they then proceeded to understand and accept him so thoroughly just as he was (serial killer tendencies and all) that they made an important impact on his life - those tendancies weren't going to disappear, but his foster Dad (a police officer) believed they could be channelled. Now that raises lots of moral, theological, and ethical issues, and that's my life's blood - so that's why they've hooked me - so far. I am far from convinced.

YES!!!!
I hunt some and DH and some of the DS's hunt a lot. And ya know, even with an animal you know you are going to eat later on, with great relish and lip-smacking enjoyment (as opposed to a HUMAN BEING -- no matter how depraved -- fer pitysakes!), you feel an obligation to only take a "good" shot because a "bad" shot can cause such pain and suffering. And God(dess) knows, there's NO shortage of those two karmic commodities floatin' around in this world!

YES AGAIN!!!!!!
And a question I would ask the creative folks that came up with the concept of "Dexter" is: Does this contribute a new element to our "culture" of de-sensitization to violence? Does this damage young people more than other TV shows, video games, etc.? Again, I go back to hunting -- because it's the only frame of reference I have for killing something. There is very little overlap with death as it is shown on TV -- clean, quick, and all ambiguities neatly resolved within an hour segment. Under the best large game hunting circumstances:

1.) You search for the animal or wait, hidden at a site where you have evidence that he has been in the past (sometimes for days -- in either case).
2.) You wait for a do-able shot.
3.) You shoot 'em.
4.) If you're lucky, he goes down after one or two shots.
5.) You hike over to check.
6.) If he's not dead, you shoot 'em again. You may get some on you.
7.) You take a picture.
Woo-Hoo! ...Then, the work begins.
8.) You skin 'em.
9.) You gut 'em.
10.) You quarter 'em.
11.) You haul 'em out.
12.) You butcher it yourself or you haul it to the game processor.

It's TIME consuming. It's HARD work. It's GROSS. It STINKS. And it's DIRTY. And that greasy blood-smell sticks to you -- after showering, sometimes even a day or so later.
Killing something (or by extrapolation -- somebody) is not easy and there's no changing the channel.

With disaffected kids blowing away their principals and milk-truck drivers murdering little Amish girls, do I want to watch a show that shows the "Up" side of sociopathic serial killers -- I'm thinkin' probably not. At the same time, would I support censorship of this material? Despite what I find to be a disturbing topic -- potentially subject to facile misrepresentaion, No, I do not.

Thank heavens, I think the train I was ridin' on just made made a U-turn. Am VERY interested in other people's opinion.

Hey Viki - we watched it last night and will be watching again next week. It was fascinating. I wasn't familiar with Michael C. Hall prior to this, but he has amazing charisma, even in such a strange role.

I haven't had a chance to see this show yet, but I am interested in it - if for no other reason than to see Michael C. Hall, it's such a departure for him from his role in Six Feet Under. I only remember seeing one promo for it and it came across as dark but I didn't know it would be so grisly. I really have mixed feelings about showing the violent details - I love reading fictional murder & crime books but I can be detached when I'm reading. And since I work in the law enforcement arena I know there are true sociopaths everywhere and I hear too many details about them already. Well, when I get some spare time I'll catch the first episode on On Demand and then I'll decide if If want to continue with it.

It was bizzare. I don't like his hair, that's how I rate shows. ;)

At least there wasn't any squirting blood, I would have to turn that off. I will watch to see where it goes, totally weird. I love Dead Like Me. Never watched in on SHO but I watch it on SciFi and HDNet, which seems like 2 completely different shows (no cursing on SciFi). Actually I like a lot of the canceled SHO series...why are they so cranky about everything? Having an ending to Odyssey 5 would be nice...

I'm trying to reduce the number of shows I watch, not enough time. Think I will have to buy a video iPod and download the shows...

All I really want to say is BEVERLY LESLIE IS A HOMOSEXUAL. :rotfl2:

RCostello -- What adorable little faces in your signature piccie!

Well, I've read everyone's post and haven't seen the show yet,
but I'm hooked :rotfl2:
I was extremely busy last week at WDW so missed the first show,
I won't miss it tonight! Thanks for the "hook" :thumbsup2

Watched Dexter last night, really cool show.
Looks like this was the first episode, I was
afraid it had started last week and I had missed
the re-runnings. I hope they keep Weeds and
Dexter playin' one after the other, makes my TV
schedulin' easy. :rotfl:

OOooooh, I love Weeds!!!

I love Weeds!! I can't believe there are only 4 episodes left. I'm addicted to the opening song "Little Boxes" - I love that they've had different artists' renditions of it each week. And anything with Mary Louise Parker is a must-see in my book :thumbsup2

Yeah, I like that song too with all the various renditions.
I wish they'd release a CD with all the variations.
