Dexcom and metal detectors

Hi there!
For those who have been to the parks since they started using metal detectors, do they have you go through with your bags, or are those just hand searched?

I ask, because due to the vague wording about travel and metal detectors on the Dexcom website, we have our DD9's Dexcom receiver hand inspected at the airport, no worries about the transmitter on her body. If the bags are just hand inspected, we can take her receiver out of it's case and put in the bag until we're through security.

I know I can wait until we get there and see for myself, but I'm trying to be as prepared as possible!

And thanks so much to you all! This forum has done so much to help alleviate a lot of my nervousness about our WDW trip.

They do not use x-ray detectors, which I think can be more of a problem. All bags are hand searched - mostly they are only looking for prohibited items. I doubt they will even ask what it is. They have never asked about my TENS unit, even with all the wires attached to it.

The metal detectors are a fairly-low intensity, but they may pick up a unit attached to someone. They would not pick up, for example, most surgical screws. If she has a unit on her body/implant/on a belt, just tell the security people she has a medical device. They will tell you what to do from there, probably use a hand-wand. But if it is in a bag, then they will just look at it and not pass it through a machine or anything.

Yes they hand search all bags. On the off chance she has to go through the metal detector the bag goes on the outside while the person walks through. You can tell them she has the metal on her. No problem. They deal with this kind of thing all the time.

what I do and I am on medtronic pump and CGM I tell them that I do not want to go thought the meter detector and I tell them I have a pump and CGM and they do the hand wand on me no problem at all I do have a friend that had a few screws in her jaw and it went off on her.

I carry a lot of supplies on me and they never ask any things

granted not at Disney but I have had the surgical screws in my have set off metal detectors including at a hospital in Orlando

I have family that works security at Disney, and he said that a lot of surgical screws don't seem to cause problems, but I suppose it depends on size, location, etc.... just tell the security CM that you have implanted metal from a surgery and they make everything work :)

I'm kind of dreading the metal detectors with my son on his first post-accident trip. He has titanium rods from ankle to hip in left leg. Screws and pins in both ankles, and 4 titanium plates in his head. I personally don't mind explaining, but he suffers from severe anxiety and I know he is going to be upset and mortified at getting extra attention, holding up the line.

If they ask him to go through just say can we step a side to explain something to you so we do not hold up the line and then tell then or just quickly say about half my son left side is mettle from a accident would this set it off? They really do make it Easey I have a friend with a lot of mettle too and she never sets it off

I have been through the metal detectors at Disney many times. They ask you if you have any metal in your pockets. They have little white round basins on the side in which you can place keys, change, etc. Your DD could place the dexcom in the basin when she goes through the metal detector.

My 19 year old grandson with DM1 went with us in May. He carries his FRIO bag and dexcom in the pockets of his cargo shorts, so he doesn't go through bag check. This was the first year he was frequently stopped and asked to empty his pockets. He had no problems and didn't need to go through the metal detectors.

Unfortunately, he has set off every metal detector we have been through. There have been 3 or 4 times now since his accident. I wish we could just get a card or something that would explain and let him through. He has 4 titanium plates in his head as well, due to a brain injury during the same accident. Because of this, he has PTSD along with his injuries and anxiety. He is always very nervous, and it's obvious. He's on lots of meds, but only so much you can take and not be a zombie.

I just dread having to explain his injuries every time we enter a park, as he gets very embarrassed and I don't want to start off every day with him getting upset and stressed out. I am praying things go much more smoothly than I anticipate.

Not complaining about the metal detectors. I think they are necessary in today's world, and the parks need that extra security. I just wish people with huge amounts of metal in their body, like my son, could be given a card to explain. I don't think he should be exempt from search, I just dread having to keep saying it at every park. Perhaps I will make my own card to just hand them. It may be less stressful.

If it wasn't for his brain injury, and lack of communication skills, I wouldn't be as concerned. If they give him directions fast, he will not be able to understand. It takes his brain a few minutes to process a sentence. He also often misunderstands what people want him to do. All of this, but he LOOKS perfectly normal at first glance so it catches people off guard.

Can he be wonded will that set it off if you tell the CM where on his body like left hand head extra. This is what I do

I was just reading (in prep for a fall trip) that Disney now has metal detectors installed. New since our last trip. Glad I found out before we walked in. I will treat it the same as when we were in NYC - every museum, Ferry ride to Statue of Liberty, etc had them. Just had my daughter decline and tell them she had her pump and her CGM on her. An extra step, but worth it to no screw up her diabetes.
Thanks for asking the question! I was about to ask it myself.

The only place on his body with no metal is his torso. I'm sure it will work out okay. I am just being overly stressed about it because it's my nature. I'm sure Disney will handle it professionally and make us comfortable like they always have.

Metal detectors should be fine for the decompression receiver. We let my son walk through at airports all the time. X-ray is different. We usually dont even mention that he's wearing anothing and 9 times out of 10 the metal detector doesn't pick up his pump, sensor, transmitter. The only lyrics time we mention is full body scan.

But safetywise, the metal should be fine

Can't you ask the dr for a card I had fusion and the dr sent me a card to show tsa. It had the name of the company of the implant and the hospital but small enough to fit in your pocket. But it might be worth asking if they have an implant card they can give you. also I know this is Disney but tsa has card you can print and fill out with stuff you want the agents to know but not others.

Here the link I know it says tsa and some of the info won't apply for Disney but maybe it help. Sorry if this dose not help but maybe it will.

Thanks so much! Going to look into this right now.

You do not have to explain the injuries or disability - you just have to tell them that the metal exists. All you have to say is "I had surgery and have metal in my neck." That is all they care about - where the metal is. They do not need to know anything specific. They just need to know that the metal exists and the general part of the body. I got this from a current security CM.

also about the card some CM will not even look at them but some will so when you go have a plane B just like you need to with any disability
