Detroit-Style Pizza

I had to Google it to see what it is. I have never heard of it before.
I didn’t even know it was a thing until I stumbled across a YouTube video. We have pizza once a week and love to try new styles. This one was FANTASTIC.

We made our first Detroit-style pizza today. How is this not a regular thing people eat?! SO GOOD!

Thank you, Detroit. THANK YOU!
It's because when people think deep dish, they think Chicago style.

I've had real Detroit style once. So good. I've had the Little Caesar's version and it's acceptable for chain pizza. I think there's a place in downtown Toronto that does it but I rarely go downtown anymore, even pre-pandemic.

Even though I live closer to Detroit and two of my sons live in the metro area and would agree with you OP, my heart and taste buds are still with Chicago style.

There are several. The one I tried was very good.

only thing I know about city Pizza

NY - to thin, and dont tell me to fold it and half
Chicago- its like a pile of goo, to thick
Calafornia - I used to think you couldnt make a bad pizza until they started putting healthy junk on it

I've heard of them but probably haven't tried it. There's a place called Square Pie Guys in San Francisco that has them.

I'm rather disturbed of the idea that the name was really about using automotive drip pans or metal automatic trays for pizza.

I've heard of variations on rectangular deep dish. A place near me has what they call "Sicilian style". It looks like this:

Then there's Roman style (pizza al taglio), like this place:

I gone in to take a look, but haven't tried it. They sell by weight, which is way different than any other pizza place I've seen.

I got a Detroit Style pizza pan for Christmas. I made pizza in it tonight. It was awesome. I let the crust rise for a couple of hours before I baked it. I put the cheese on first. Ladled some sauce on and covered it with pepperoni.

We love Detroit style pizza. We specifically went when we were in Detroit a few years back and have been searching for similar pizza here since then. There was a Buddy's fairly close to the Ford Museum so we specifically planned our day around it. We just tried frozen Detroit style pizza from Costco yesterday. It was reasonable.

We also discovered that the pan style (in an aluminum pan) from Papa Murphy's is sort of a nod to that style crust-wise. (though it is round and has mozzarella cheese.) We liked it a lot more than their usual.

The picture of the square slice you shared is Sicilian style pizza. It’s popular in Brooklyn. Most of the pizzerias have the round pie and the square Sicilian.

The picture is from Arinell's Pizza, which has locations in Berkeley and San Francisco. They call their thin style "Neopolitan" and the thick style "Sicilian". And I've worked with Italians. When I brought one of those thick ones back to the office, someone commented on the "Sicilian".

That being said, they're not necessarily pizza snobs. In that office we had ordered from the California chain Round Table and they were OK with it. I've seen them OK with variations including California style pizza as well as Chicago stuffed. One guy I worked with was a little bit perturbed because his daughter liked California Pizza Kitchen.

However, many just laugh at Italian-American cuisine. Although it's supposed of Italian origin, one asked "what's fettuccine Alfredo?" And spaghetti with meatballs?
