My DH and I were both born and raised in suburban Detroit. DH even lived IN Detroit for a little while. My dad worked his whole working life at Ford. My DH's brother works there now. We know what cars mean to Detroit. But for our own reasons, after buying domestic cars for all of our lives (except for DH's brief ownership of a Mazda) we now own a Toyota. We still own Fords and Chevys, but we drive a Toyota.

We will be driving this car home to Michigan for Thanksgiving. Are we going to have a problem being harassed or vandalized? I remember a time maybe back in the late 70's when foreign cars were being vandalized in the Detroit areas for obvious reasons. I just wondered if this was going on now, especially with the weakness of the big 3 automakers. What have you read in the Detroit News, if anything?

ETA..This should tell you how long we have been gone..it's the News Herald now, isn't it?

Not sure where you're coming from, but we'll be driving our Honda home to the Detroit area over Thanksgiving too! Drove it home last summer for a week without incident. I worked for Honda there for 5 years before we moved out of state in 2006. Unless you plan to park it on a Chevy Dealer's lot or something, I can't imagine that you'd have any problems. So many people are getting laid off right now that there's probably not a good feeling towards the Big 3 at this point anyways!

And, last I knew it was still the Detroit News, but we've been gone a couple years too.

You shouldn't have any problems at all.......& I think it's still the Detroit News

We live 10 minutes from Metro (right smack in the middle of the auto region) and I haven't heard of any incidents (just don't plan on parking in a UAW lot, LOL ;) ). I do remember the incidents you are talking about though ~ that was going on when I was a little girl.

The Detroit News is still the same...the News Herald is our downriver paper.
Enjoy your trip back to MI! :)

No worries. I've never heard of anything like that happening in my adult life (I was a kid in the 70s).

We live about 1.5 hrs away from Detroit but DH works close to there, and I don't think you'll have a problem. And yep, Detroit News & also the Detroit Free Press.

I am a native Michigander living in a suburb of Detroit. I am retired (after 36 years) from one of the Big 3 (I use the term loosely these days - sadly). I haven't heard of anything like this. You should have no problems.

Our papers are The Detroit News and The Detroit Free Press.

That's the name I meant...the Free Press!! I thought they combined them years ago and just called it the Free Press. News Herald=downriver..that's why I remembered that..I lived in Trenton.

Thanks for all the info eveyone. I live in the deep south, and it seems like the closer you get to Detroit, the fewer foreign cars you see. And actually some of these "foreign cars" are being made here in the U.S. now. I remember the days when people would take a baseball bat to a foreign car. :scared: Not that often, but I did hear about it more than once. Crazy people.

Just a little aside..I also checked online to see if Fantasyland was still going on in Lincoln Park..and it is!! I went to that every year growing up, even when I was a teen. I am hoping we can drop by there to see it while we are visiting..

Of course not. Tons of people drive foreign cars. I promise you, no one will notice. The only thing about your car that might stand out around here is the out of state plates. Other than that, you're good.

Err...no. You shouldn't have any problems. Cars are important to us, but we're not crazy. Believe it or not, Toyota and Mazda are actually bringing jobs to Michigan.

There is the Detroit News and the Free Press, they did, however, combine their weekend editions for a little while, I believe. Not anymore, though.

Once upon a time, it might have been a problem, but you'll be OK now. As pointed out, it's a lot harder to tell what's a "foreign" car than it used to be. I admit I was a bit apprehensive when I took our RAV4 to a travel hockey game in the Detroit area a couple of weeks ago and realized when I surveyed the lot that the only 2 non-"Big 3" cars in the whole lot were our RAV4 and a Honda! But my tires were still inflated and the paint job intact when we left after being there all day.

However, my family has experienced such problems in the past. In the mid-1980's my Mom made a sales call on a UAW office and parked her Volvo in their lot instead of being smart and parking a few doors down and walking over. In the middle of her presentation, someone came in and asked "Whose #$@! Volvo is that parked out front?!?!?!" My Mom said it was hers. They terminated the presentation and kicked her out of the office.
