Destinations where Canadian dollar can stretch further?

For Thailand; if you are looking for a more culturally rewarding 'Caribbean' style sun/sand/surf vacation you can't do much better. I would recommend Thailand and their resorts over Bali.

I'd recommend the Seychelles and Mauritius over Bali too. Both are much more affordable compared to the Maldives and are just more interesting.

Cyprus is also another overlooked sun/sand/surf destination but if British tourists aren't your thing maybe not.

Curious how old your child was at time of travel? I'm semi-intrigued by Thailand but it doesn't feel as "safe" to me as Europe or North America (and yes that is my prejudice talking, I'm happy to be re-educated here)
So our daughter was almost 13 at the time of travel (she turned 13 a few weeks after we returned) and not once did we feel unsafe in Thailand, people were so friendly and helpful. We found travelling throughout Asia for the most part people were welcoming and out not trying to scam us. Last summer, again with our youngest dd in tow, we did a 12 night Royal Caribbean cruise that left out of Singapore with ports in Vietnam, Hong Kong (2 days in port here), Taiwan and a few ports in Japan ending in Tokyo. It was a bucket list trip which gave us a little taste of Asia and we got to experience both Hong Kong Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland / DisneySea (only Shanghai is left to cross off our list). We spent 5 nights in Singapore precruise and 5 nights in Tokyo post cruise (3 of which were at Tokyo Disney). We only did 1 ship excursion to Kyoto which was not well organized-- the tours we found on our own (through cruise message boards) for Vietnam and Taiwan and we did explore and plan quite a few activities on our own. Japan was a little harder to navigate (though was one of our favourite places, as well as Singapore) because people spoke the least amount of English in Japan (which I found surprising--but found out it is because Japan is one country that was not colonized) but they were still so willing to help. When were were struggling to figureout how to use a vending machine or buy tickets for the subway people went out of their way to help us (google translate really helped).

Honestly we have felt less safe in parts of the US and Europe (possibly because we are an interracial couple) than we ever felt in Asia.
