Destination birthday party?

i've been to destination sweet 16s, at atlantis in the bahamas and disney (of course). i was also invited to another somewhere in the caribbean but couldn't go because i think i was somewhere else. my friends and i go away to celebrate things, but we don't really consider it "parties". it's more like "hey, wouldn't it be fun instead of spending $X on an expensive dinner to go to X destination for the weekend and celebrate?". one of my friends is doing this during our study period this year and is going to vegas, but i declined because i have finals and he does not.

I don't get destination, on-going birthdays for just a birthday. I can see it for a 40th or a 50th where plans are made in advance, but I don't understand those that need to have a weekend EVERY birthday.

Someone in my life does this and for each birthday, it is a BIG DEAL. So far, I've been swindled into a very expensive dinner, and then travel the next day (unknown as of now but it has changed three times). When something is said that is too absurd or too expensive and I speak up, the remarks about my spending habits drive me batty. Yes, I do ignore them as usual (as I've done my entire life) but you'd think they'd learn by now that I can't be swayed.

And the guilt. Horrible. I'd just stick to my guns and when something is above and beyond, build a fence.
