Some friends & I are making another trip there but this time my cousin is going to tag along. He's a newly diagnosed diabetic and he's never been to DW before. He was kind of dissapointed since he was looking forward to some of the yummy food/desserts I told him about (before he was diagnosed) He's only 20 & always wanted to go to Disney World (I went for the first time this summer) and I really really want this to be fun for him but w/ the sweet tooth he has I just dont want him to get bummed out while he's there. I was planning on getting some sugar free/diabetic friendly candy & goodies to take with I got from some Doctors. However are the resteraunts & any other places on Disney able to make anything sugar free for him? (Besides the regular sugar free vanilla icecream) IS there anyone who had any experience dealing w/ someone in their party who was a diabetic? Again I just want him to have a blast & not get bummed out when he see's the sugar. :confused3

That is an important distinction. If he is type II (but I'm guessing given his age it is type I) he can be extra diligent about counting his carb intake and then perhaps share a dessert with someone?

There are a couple of places for sugar free, and no sugar added ice cream. There is a no sugar added (but it may be sugar free, I honestly can't remember) individual cheesecake at the Boardwalk Bakery.

There is always fruit, of course. You could in a full service restaurant ask about a selection of fruit and cheese.

Part of living life well with diabetes (either type) is learning to control the disease, in part through food. He will have to learn to adjust his life to accomodate his health. Very tough to do in some cases.

My Daughter is Type 1. We have had no problems during out trips keeping her sugers in the correct zone. We did this by sharing desserts. It worked for us, but my Daughter was 4 then 5 and ran around like a nut. :rotfl2:

Also Cosmic Rays has a no suger brownie that is 16 carbs and very good. I get one as my dessert because I like it. You can also ask the various carts for the carb count of the icecreams. Several of the icecreams are 15 to 20 carbs.

He was diagnosed w/ type 2. He's on the pills right now & they're going to see how well it controls it. So far it's doing a relatively good job at keeping it low. Thank you for the suggestions so far

Also remember that the amount of walking you do in Disney will bring down his BS ......I am a type 2. I am usually to full to eat any desserts. BUT did leave room for a piece of apple pie and vanilla ice cream at the Crystal Palace. Good luck and have fun

That sugar-free brownie *is* good but (at least when I had it a couple of years ago) it was made with sugar alcohols (malitol and sorbitol - both or one). Those can cause a mild or HUGE case of diarrhea for some people. Some people aren't affected at all! He might want to go easy on the sugar-free stuff if it is sweetened with the alcohols until he knows how it affects him - or he might spend his trip in the bathroom.

The ice cream carts in the MK (maybe elsewhere?) used to sell a strawberry ice pop that was sugar-free.

You can also contact Brenda Bennett of Magic Kingdom foods (you can find her email address in the FAQ on the disAbilities board) and she might be able to email you a list sugar-free or low carb desserts and where to find them. Also be sure to note the diabetes on any ADR's and work with the chef for a low sugar option.

It is true that the walking may allow him to eat a few more carbs than usual but that is very individual. Make sure he keeps a close eye on his blood sugar!

We were just there and my husband is a type 2 diabetic as well. He maintained it with a strict diet for a few years but recently had to start the pills. What I would recommend is talking to the chefs. Mention on the reservations the dietary need and again when you check in. Some chefs are really great about it and will make special things (the hoop dee doo revue did this as well as the polynesian dinner)....one even walked with my husband thru the entire buffet (donalds breakfast) and explained what and how much was in all. One other basically said that their rubs were mostly sugar so beware. But again most were willing to grille up the meat with out the rubs. As for desserts...the hoop dee doo gave him one of those no sugar added brownies. The Hollywood and Vine lunch had a no sugar berry cobbler thing. The Polynesian brought out a special dessert that supposidly was sugar free.
