So did Radio Shack WAAAAY back when PC's first came out aftermarket. In fact, a lot of non-IBM PC makers did that. Packard Bell, Compaq, etc..

We just got 3 Compaq Presarios at Walmart for $498 each (for work). Nothing fancy, but a nice upgrade to what we had.

I have worked in the PC industry for many years and we have tried Kingston and Micron and may other types of high and low end ram inthe dells we worked on both ECC and non ECC and had to buy ram directly from Dell to find any that worked so yes there is ram that only works in a Dell PC that you purchase from Dell directly. Thankfully I no longer work in that part of the industry anymore and I do not have to deal with Dell another bad one we used to see alot was the Sony Viao. I would also reccomend a MAC like another person on here suggested far more reliable and stable best graphics machines around also. I built my machine and have had not 1 problem with it.

I just bought my second Dell. I gave my old one to the Grandkids, and it works just fine, but I was ready for a new model. I happen to love Dell.

We added non-Dell memory to our Dell laptop with no problem. Bought it at Best Buy as I recall.

If you really would like to build it, there are books explaining everything. I had to remove the motherboard and replace it in my Gateway. They sent me an instruction manual and I, a computer illiterate, was able to follow the instructions. We bought all our parts from PCBoost.com for this PC (other than the monitor - that was from Justdeals.com) and it included instructions. We had a friend walk us through the set-up and now either one of us can replace most of the parts.

I am Hp fan to.

I have upgrade my computer many times in ram, DVD drive which is exteral because I was to lazy to in internal one, and USB ports.

I would a new computer but I can't afford one at the moment.

Hmmm.... if I was looking for a new desktop, I would go straight for...

The new iMac, without even blinking an eye. That's it, the whole computer is contained in the monitor enclosure. Nothing can touch Apple in quality, support, performance, and ease of use.

while I personally like the new Mac look, I factor in the upgradability issue.

We ended up building DH's computer since he wanted a gaming system and nothing out there would do without paying an arm and a leg for it. By building it ourselves, we were able to build his a killer system at the price of a bestbuy pc without all the junk they pad their systems with and with the best cards we could find.

I'm a very happy Mac girl and strongly recommend their products.

But---

Macs can be more expensive than a comparable "PC" machine. Also take into account software. Get a Mac and you'll pretty much need to get all new software.

New G5 iMac looks way cool, but I would not want an all in one model. My monitor has outlasted several machines.

Yes, the availability of software has been an issue for one friend - but it all depends on what you use your computer for. She loves cross-stitching and wanted to use some of the software that was available for creating patterns - only available for the pc. So that's what she got.

I use mine constantly for photos - iPhoto makes it sooooooo incredibly easy to download, post to our .mac web site, email and print. So I'm absolutely in love with my iBook - especially with wireless internet and printing through the Airport. And iMovie is great too. Oh, and iTunes and the iPod - not only can the iPod hold music, but it all hold information like a PDA and you can download your digital pics to it if your card gets full.

Now I know there are caparable things out there for pc's, but it is also about being user friendly and what you are already familiar with. I could get all the pc stuff, but there would be a definite learning curve!

First, think about what you need it for, and work from there.
