OK, so I'm trying to make some name tags in the style of the ones where you can only see the characters inside the letters and the rest is solid. I have some "open" fonts, so I can see the character through the letters, but I can't figure out how to make the "border" solid. Thanks!

Assuming I understood what you were trying to do (have the characters peeping out from the inside of the letters but have a solid background outside of the letter outline?), this is how I do it, though I'm sure there's a better way to explain it!

Put the font and the characters in separate layers. Send the character
layer(s) to the back/bring the font layer to the front. Then using the magic eraser (at least that's what it is in photoshop) though I think the regular eraser tool works too, erase the part of the character outside of the letters.

If you need any help, feel free to send me the image and I'll try to get rid of the excess character if those directions don't make sense :)
