Design help needed

I am hoping for some help. We are doing some work to the house and I’m getting to what should be the fun part but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by choices.

We are remodeling our garage and the small room next to it. We are putting in a bathroom, laundry room, and family room.

I need help with wall color and furniture color. There is not a lot of natural lighting in the area. There are 2 windows and one door that is full glass. I was thinking a lighter wall color to reflect light but I’m open to ideas.

We are building a bar into the back of the room. Leaning towards the same blue as cabinets but could do a wood stain finish. I don’t want it to be dark and heavy looking.

To give an idea of what I have chosen already.

I love your choices so far! I think a nice cream color wall with just a slight hue to a yellow tone instead of a brown would look great with the blue cabinetry and would be bright and airy feeling.

Do you have pets that would be in this area? If so I’d go with darker colored chocolate brown leather furniture. Make sure it’s not bonded leather, it will get ruined by pet nails in a couple of weeks as it’s just a thin layer fused to a base fabric. You could also add an accent chair that has a pattern with some blues and yellows. Is this going to be the tv room? If so maybe look into an all recliner movie theater type couch. I poked around on rooms to go for some ideas. I love this mint/sage color and think it would go well with the blue cabinets. The saddle color would also look nice for a lighter brown that would forgive a little wear and tear on the couch.

@princesscinderella Thank you for taking the time to respond and look for furniture options.

This will be our tv room. We currently have 2 cats but would like to get a dog again in the future. DH would like a recliner.

I was leaning in a similar direction for the wall color. It is a large space (500 square feet) so I am hoping that will help lighten the space. I would also like an area rug for the seating area. I’m concerned the floor will be cool (it’s a slab as it was a garage).

I am also doing brushed nickel for my hardware.

I love that blue cabinet. As long as it's on bottom, it won't look heavy. If you are doing upper cabinets, maybe they could match the wall color to blend in.

I agree with above post that an off-white with slight cream undertone would warm up the room. Don't go gray - it is a cool color and will make the room seem cooler.

You mentioned a bar across the back of the room - maybe put a big mirror over it to reflect light? An area rug is a good idea - if you can't find one you like, buy a length of w2w carpet and have it bound on the edges.

@Travel60 thank you for taking the time to respond. It will just be the bathroom vanity and 2 cabinets in the laundry room, so not a lot of cabinets which is why I liked the pop of color.

I’ll have to think I about the mirror idea. That would reflect a lot of light. There is a window behind the bar but I might be able to do something next to it. I was thinking about floating shelves on each side of the window.

So many decisions! I’m excited it will greatly increase our living space.

Think about bars that have a mirrored back and glass floating shelves. Maybe you could figure out how to do something like that.

not much help with design ideas but I did recently read an article about 'regrets' folks had on their choices with renovations so I'll pass on what that was mentioned multiple times-with the blue (green, gray...) colored cabinets that are popular now-apparantly it's near impossible to find matching paint for dings and scratches (and they complain that the touch-up sticks provided by manufacturers don't match well) so BEFORE the doors are attached you might want to take one to a place that sells paint and have them make an identical small can of touch up paint so you don't have to remove/rehang a door to do a color match after the fact.

I will also caution that you need to be prepared for extra dusting in the laundry room with darker cabinets-i think they look stunning but you don't realize how much lint dust despite the best of venting is produced until you have a dark surface for it to adhere to (says the person who has light cabinets In the laundry room but opted for darker laminate flooring).

the hex code is a great idea but if the cabinets will be getting any natural light keep in mind that you may get some subtle fading so do a test spot in an unnoticeable spot before doing any touch-up. we served as the color match source for one of our neighbors we wanted to paint something in a color he used in his home so we bought based off a paint match on his-then when he went to do touch up paint awhile later he realized he had some fading so he came to us to get the paint information b/c our match was based on his slightly faded color vs. his original paint color.

Good thing he had you to color match from!!! No natural lighting in the bathroom or laundry room so hopefully fading won’t be a big concern. But with my luck…
