Just returned from a stay at Desert Inn & Suites (not to be confused with the Desert Palm) located at 1600 Harbor Blvd.
This is a standard motel facility with slightly larger rooms, some of which have been converted into different size suites. We stayed in a 1 Br Parlor suite which consisted of 2 Queen beds in the BR and a sleeper sofa in the LR, 2 tv's, refrig., micro, coffeemaker and jacuzzi. The sink/vanity area was separate from the commode/tub area. The carpeting seemed fairly new and the bed mattresses were fairly comfortable, but quite thin. The sleeper sofa mattress was typically skimpy, fine for children and adults without back problems. There is a small free-standing closet that contained an iron and board and space for hanging clothes.
There is only one A/C unit in the BR which also serves to cool the LR. If the door between the rooms is not kept open, the LR will become warm. There is a fan installed in the wall between the two rooms, but this can be noisy. This was not a problem for us since our 4 year old was sleeping in the LR, but if you require a good measure of privacy, this could present a problem.
We did not use the pool while we were there as it was closed for painting. It is small and nothing special. The pool is enclosed on one side with pane glass windows that face the parking lot.
Continental breakfast is included, but it consists only of toast, pastries, coffee, juice and a different fruit each day. They didn't even have cereal. This was not a problem for us, but if pancakes and eggs are your thing, this might not be the place for you. On the other hand, Dennys is next door and I-Hop is 2 doors down.
Parking is limited to one car per unit. If you are here during the busy season, parking late at night might be a problem.
We found our room to be clean and housekeeping to be quite competent. We did tip the maid every day, and that might have had an effect on how clean our room was kept.
The best thing about this motel is location, location, location. It is approximately 100 feet from the Harbor Blvd. crosswalk to DL. Trips back to the hotel mid-day for a break were a 6-minute breeze. It was nice to park the car when we arrived and not drive until the day we left.
In summary, Desert Inn & Suites is a basic motel, nothing fancy, but a good value for the price. We would stay here again. I think I have covered just about everything, but if you have any questions, ask away!
