dermatologist, Ped or someone else?

My dd8 has an extremely dry scalp I'm at my wits end with it.. I've tried everything over the counter and nothing is helping. I'm making an appointment with someone on Monday but who? Should I just skip the Ped and head right for the dermatologist? or is there someone better to help handle this situation? Our insurance does not require a referral to see a specialist.

I'd go to the derm.


I have VERY dry scalp (think fly away dandruff- not scaley, waxey dandruff).
I used a moisturizing shampoo I got from my hairdresser. Cleared me UP!
I just had a dye job and usually get some flakes after that but the moisturizing shampoo is the way to go.

No I haven't. Can I ask what kind of shampoo you use? I am not sure how long it will take us to get in so I'll do anything until then. I've spent alot of money on all kinds of shampoo's so far nothing has helped.

I use Aveda Scalp Benefits shampoo and conditioner in the fall/winter when we run the heat on my son and I. We both get itchy, flakey dry scalp (not dandruff.) It helps alot.

Go to the dermatologist. You may be drying it out even more by using OTC products-especially those made for adults.

It was a hemp shampoo, moisturizing. I got it from the hairdresser.

He may have eczema or mild psoriasis, no OTC shampoo will help that.

If you have to wait a long time to get a derm appt., I'd see if the ped can get you in sooner. If the ped thinks you should see a derm he/she can probably get you in right away. If you can't get an appt. with either of them in 1-2 weeks I'd change doctors/networks.

Good luck with whatever route you choose! DH has the same problem and I'm praying that DS doesn't get it. We've had enough problems with oh..gosh..what's it called? Cradle cap? Where excess oils and skin builds up and clumps together? Well..whatever it's called..it's a pain in the rear and fortunately, DS seems to be growing out of it because it's not been as noticeable lately.

My hairdresser just told me to try red vinegar on my very dry scalp- something about the ph. It's cheap and harmless so definitely worth a try. She said to wet hair, apply vinegar and leave it on for a few minutes, then wash with a good moisturizing shampoo.

Dermo for sure. If you don't fully believe in the answer you like from the first one, get a second and third opinion. If there's still nothing, and your insurance is good, make an endocrinologist appt and have her thyroid and hormone levels checked out. The winners in medicine are the moms who become pitbulls to find the answers for their kids. I admire you for seeking out an answer.

ETA: call the ped, think "classy" and "authoritative," and do not rest until you have him on the phone and you've emphasized the importance of this issue. Tell him you need his help in getting in to see the dermo ASAP. One call from the ped to the dermo and you'll be in tomorrow.
