Depression...

it might have just been the fit with the psychiatrist. i went to one for a while and they just didn't fit with me, i felt like they were spending the whole time judging me and not really listening to what i was staying. so i stopped going to her and started going to this guy and he has been great. he's really helped me...i haven't needed meds yet so thats good but if i miss a session i deffinitally feel it.

maybe you just need to find someone who's a better fit for you. :confused3
Perhaps. Then again, I was 10 years old, so that might've had something to do with it.

The school councelor might be able to help (a teacher recommended that I talk with her, actually).

::yes:: you should we have a psycologist at school and she's great if you just need a little break and all the teachers understand and everything so you don't get in trouble or anything for it

Meg, if it pops up some days and is fine others, I really think it would be better to be on some type of anti-depressant. A counselor can't do that.

Another tip, maybe try to find a younger, female psychiatrist. My first one was a female in her early 50s who was a cancer survivor. Despite all that, it was not a good match. I've been recently seeing in a group session these two young ladies fresh from school with their degree. Amazing difference.

I'll try to get in to see her (my schedule's a bit hectic, so I need to find a period where I'm not taking a test or something major).

My old one was my mom's best friend's mother. She didn't really help, and kept trying to get me to talk when I clearly did NOT want to talk. :sad2:

I guess I'll try to talk to my mom about this?

No, I get what you mean. I vent to my guy friend a lot, and I get this air of "I care about you, I'm here to listen and to help" from him. Guys aren't as snobby or (as) cliquish as girls, and they have a sense of protection about them that comforts me.

oh yeah my guy friends are riddiculously protective of me, it's a really nice feeling.

sometimes you just need someone who honestly doesn't care why you're sad...they just want you to feel better

My guy friend did say "all I want for you is happiness"...

If you find a pyschiatrist you think you could learn to like, after a while of sharing things, you guys will be like friends, and you won't be strangers anymore. Yes it's tough to open up, and maybe they might not agree with you, and maybe you might not feel great after each session. But things could get better.
By not looking for help, things aren't gonna get better.

I know what you mean when you say some days you're the highest of highs and the next day it's the lowest of lows and crying. I just spent an entire week, crying for an hour or more lamost every day.
This entire past week I was happy as heck (the one I spent crying was the beginng of March) and have actually been hopping and skipping.
It's like this constantly, but I guess it's just learning to cope that sometimes things are gonna suck, and then other times they aren't.

thats nice :goodvibes
my guy friend once was like "please don't be sad...if your sad then i'm sad then i won't be able to make you happy anymore"

I know how that feels. And yeah, sometimes things will suck, and sometimes they will rock.

Meg, I know you've been dealing this depression for some time. You NEED to go see someone. What about your PCP? My PCP and oncologist can prescribe anti-anxiety/depression pills. PCP gave me celexa and zoloft. Onco had me on remeron and ativan.
Bottom line, you need to see someone. Just because one didn't help doesn't mean the next won't.

Would you rather try someone new or wallow in depression like now? Don't take that as an insult, my friend. I've been there, done that and I'm determined to help anyone in that rut.

I agree. I'm on zoloft, not for depression, but for anxiety. My regular doctor prescribes it for me. I went to a psychiatrist when I was 12 to get the original prescription.

Maybe you could talk to your regular dr and ask them if they recommend a psychologist to talk to? You need to go see someone and stick with it...one psychologist or psychiatrist might not work for you but another somewhere will.

And yes, you probably need to go to a psychologist first. If they think you are bad enough that you'll need a psychiatrist they will send you to one. My dad is bipolar and he finally went into the psychologist who sent him to the psychiatrist right away and by that time he had to go into the hospital because he was so bad. Do not let it get so bad that you can't function.

 i wish you weren't depressed. definately thinking of you

this is OT, but i just wanted to say, if you have been on a psychotrophic for so long (particularly through puberty) you should probably check back in with a psychologist/iatrist, and make sure you actually still need it. your body changes A LOT from when you begin puberty to when you end it, so perhaps you no longer have the anxiety symptoms but they're either a) being created or b) you can't notice that you don't have them due to being medicated.

maybe you don't really need that medication any more. :)

Chocolate does help (I'm a bit of a chocoholic myself) but I can see where guys are better than girls in certain areas.

It's not so bad that I can't function (at least, not now). I haven't seen my regular doctor in months. (didn't have a physical last year. Long story.) Ahh, maybe I should go?

Thanks.

I went to a psychologist last year for some things and he definitely thought I still needed the medication. I'm a very anxious person even with the medication...I've had it increased recently and it seems to be helping. If I forget to take it one day I am very anxious. I guess I could go and get a second opinion but I'm just afraid of what will happen if I go off of the medicine. I don't want to be a complete bundle of nerves.

I'm truly interested in this so I'm wondering how would they be created? Is that like the placebo effect?

perhaps you should see a psychologist every year or so, just to make sure the medication is still necessary.

and it is exactly like a placebo effect. you believe that are anxious without the medication, so if you forget it, and know you forgot it, you may become anxious. instead of actually being anxious, you make yourself anxious.

but if your psychologist believes it is still necessary, then by all means take the medication. i was just worried that you had gotten the RX/diagnosis x number of years ago and continued to take medication without any follow up from a psychologist/iatrist.
