Dentist Bill. OUCH!

Yesterday, I took my two kids and myself off to the dentist for our checkup. This is our first one here in FL, and we had missed our last one due to the move, so it's been a year.

Our old dentist was a casual friend (I taught his kids Tae Kwon Do), and I had always wondered if he'd been giving us a good deal. I'm guessing the answer is yes given what the bill was yesterday!

We all had cleaning, regular x-rays and panoramic x-rays, as well as the "dental exam". Bill for the 3 of us? $752!!!!! Now that's before insurance, since now the insurance refunds the dental benefit. But at most I expect $150 back from Blue Cross.

I miss the days of $100 for the 3 of us to visit the dentist. Hmmm, it might be cheaper to fly back to our old dentist in MD!

that seems about right to me! For my daughter just to get a cleaning and flouride treatment, no xrays at all its 150.00 at the pediatric dentist (I won't take her to anything other than a pediatric dentist at her age-6-) I get 45.00 back for that from my insurance! 100.00 for the 3 of you was a gift LOL!!!

We don't have dental insurance but a cleaning with x-rays is $110 for us, without x-rays it is $75. So far ( Knock on wood) my children have good teeth and no forseeable orthidonic problems.

We also do not have dental insurance and when the 5 youngest go, it is well over $1,000.00. To make matters worse, our 8 yo got her braces put on the top of her mouth last Wednesday. She has the 2 back teeth banded and so far only 3 braces on some of her front teeth. Cost $2,877.00. If we did not have them put on her this young she would have to wear them for years later. The oldest (19) had them 5 years ago top and bottom and I don't think it was much more than that. They sure have gone up a lot! Thank goodness the two inbetween these two don't need braces. I guess if I have 6 and only have 3 in braces, I have been blessed!

Oh, this is a subject that irks me. The prices they charge are absolutely crazy! My old dentist used to charge $50/cleaning...that's it. He retired and sold his practice to a young guy. Every time me or my daughter had an appt for a cleaning, the price increased. Still is. That's an average of every 3-4 months because we both go every 6 months, but not at the same time. I complained about it because it was insane. I could see increasing the prices every year, but every 3-6 months?? It's almost $150 now for a cleaning with x-rays. I don't have dental insurance, which is why I complained. Now sometimes I get a 10% discount for paying cash, which is better than nothing.

I spent almost $8,000 on my dd14's teeth (braces, expander, surgery) within the past 3 years. No insurance to cover any of it. I've been needing jaw surgery to the tune of approx $20,000 which I just cannot afford.
