I had an upper tooth that bothered me for a couple of years but nothing showed up in x-ray so DDS did nothing about it. When it got to be unbearable, DDS sent me to specialist to check to see if root was cracked. They said it wasn't so did root canal and crown. That tooth still hurts a year later and the gums will swell up in pain. DDS said sometimes that happens. I have had other root canals and have never had pain continue after root canal and crown. DDS said it would be unadviseable to pull that tooth now that it has been cut down for the crown but I am ready to rip it out of my head! Has anyone else had this happen?

Here's my bizarre story:

I had a crown, the gum around just that tooth was inflamed. The dentist tried everything when I'd come in for cleanings 2x year. No cracks, etc showed on xrays. Finally said to me--are you allergic to any metals? I wouldn't say it's an allergy, but I can't wear silver because it turns my skin green. He pulled that crown and put a temp in ---it was better in days! I ended up having to get a crown made with gold under the porcelin.

That is odd.....who would have thought?? My crown is also gold under porcelin (sp?) as they won't work with anything else now.

Has your DDS checked your bite. Sometimes the most minor adjustment will make the pain stop. My opinion is to find a new dentist. Dentistry is painfree now, there is no excuse for him to be dismissing your concerns like that.

He did check the bite and shaved the crown surface down a bit. I feel like we have tried everything and that is why I am ready to ask about pulling it. Saving that tooth does not seem to be a priority for me any more.....

It sounds like you may need an apicoectomy. I had a root canal a couple of years ago. This year I developed swelling at the base of this tooth. My dentist sent me to a specialist for an apicoectomy. Not a lot of fun, that's for sure. Below is a link for more info.

Well, now, this is interesting! I was hoping someone else had experienced something similar to what I am going thru (unfortunately for you) so that I could take that info to my DDS and ask more about it. Thank you for your help!! :goodvibes

OK. I know that both the DDS and the specialist say nothing irregular shows up in x-ray. DDS said he hopes, for my sake, that tooth never needs to be pulled. :confused3 However, is has been a little loose since before the root canal and I have pointed that out but no one has said anything! Again... :confused3

My crown sometimes bothers me. It's porcelain and my dentist says no matter how hard they try to make them smooth, the edges are sort of like glass and can irritate your gums.

Interesting about the metal under the porcelain. I have a nickel allergy and so does my DD. Her braces gave her nothing but trouble! I'll have to remember this for future reference. Who says DISing isn't educational. :teeth:

Nothing showed on my x-ray either. I think I might see another dentist, before it gets worse and causes more damage. Good luck! :)

Maybe you have a fractured root? The only reason I know anything about this is cuz I'm going through this as we speak. My dds sent me to a peridontist who said I need a root canal at the least, which may not take b/c he is afraid I may have a fractured root, which means I'd lose the tooth and need an implant. He said if I want to "gamble" get the root canal (about $1,000) but if it is a fractured root, the root canal won't work and then I'd need the implant, so the $1,000 down the drain. :confused3 . What a pain in the you know what. Oh, nothing showed on my xray either. The peridontist said there is some slight shadowing that's all.

I had a root canal done on my top left back molar about 18 mos ago. The tooth needed a crown but it kept abcessing so dentist put a temp crown on it to see what would happen to the tooth and make sure that the root wouldn't flare up and then cause me to have to have another crown. Put the temp on in Dec of last year. 3 weeks ago my temp crown breaks off and I'm left with a gaping hole. Didn't hurt until about 10 days ago. Then it got bad so Dentist gave me amoxicillin. I went in for a consult on Monday and it turns out that my tooth had fractured. I just went in today and had the tooth pulled and am now in worse pain than when I had the abcess. I'm hoping it will go away soon! Teeth pain is the worst and I feel your pain! I told the Dentist from now on when a tooth gets that bad just pull it.

I hope you can figure it out soon.

:guilty: the metal under the crown I got today looked silver?? :confused3 I hope you find out what's wrong and are able to get it taken care of-Ive been dealing with this since Aug.!

It happened to me too and under a bridge no less.

I had root-resectioning gum surgery and infection cleaned up 2x. I even had a root canal after my bridge and that didn't help. So..I had the whole thing removed and the offending tooth removed. It was the only way after approx 3 years of on and off misery. I have total empathy for you but sometimes 'something' isn't quite right and no amount of dental work will get to the cause?? :confused3

I had some teeth that kept bothering me on and off for years, one in each quarter of my mouth.
IT was because i was gritting my teeth at night.
Dentist made me a the thinnest nightguard possible and it has helped a lot

Check with on the occlusion & for a tooth fracture.

Hi, I work for a dentist and used to work for an Endodontist. Was this tooth a molar? Some molars have three canals, but there are some with four. We have had cases where there was an "extra" canal and the nerve wasn't removed from that one. If all the nerve material isn't removed and sealed properly, you will still have a problem. Please follow up with another endodontist just to be sure, if not, then I would have the tooth removed before I would suffer more. Good luck.
