Dental insurance

So we have dental coverage through my husband's work. It stinks. We don't pay much for it, and I'd GLADLY pay more for better coverage, so I'm about to start looking for a supplementary plan. So any suggestions?

It is impossible to get good dental insurance.

I pay about $30 per month through the Federal Government Employee Health Plan. It covers about 50% of the "Usual and Customary" fees with an upper limit of $3,000 for a calendar year.

Earlier this year I had a root canal which needed to be done by a specialist. The fee was $706, and I had to pay $353. The dentist told me that if I did not have insurance, where they had a contract, the fee would have been over $900.

So more than likely what you have is better than nothing.

One thing to consider is that general health insurance is bought by everyone who can, and not used very much by many people. Too many people who get dental insurance will only buy it if they feel that they will be using it.

I have Delta Dental through my health plan at work. I pay about $24 a month, and that covers 80% of 'normal' things, like routine cleanings and cavity removal and fillings. Unfortunately my dentist isn't in the Delta 'network', so I end up having to pay out of pocket, and then I end up getting the 80 percent back six weeks later. I'm supposed to be getting my wisdom teeth out(been putting it off), and that actually kicks over into my health insurance, not my dental, because of having to be put under and it being considered surgery.

We pay about $115 per month for dental insurance for the family. We are covered for $1000 per person per calendar year. So for pretax $1380, we get $3000 worth of coverage. We are with Delta Dental through DH job. Hope that gives you an idea of coverage prices.

I had Delta Dental with Disney, and reasonable prices at the dentist, plus the cost was very little.

They also offer individual plans at a reasonable rate. I think 75$ a year for a single person, with decent coverage for routine care.

i need supplemental dental too. I have dental at work and it stinks like all dental plans do. I looked up delta dental but if buying individual it was expensive and the coverage wasn't so great.

Anyone have any thoughts? ideas? anyone ever tried a dental school?

It's hard to get a decent plan without doing it thru an employer. At best the yearly max is $1000-2000 a year that they will pay. A lot of the private plans you get have waiting periods, missing tooth clause or you have to go to a specified dentist (and they are usually not who you would choose).
Also watch if you are getting it as a secondary insurance, a lot of companies will no longer co-ordinate benefits.
