Dental Implants

About 12 years ago DH's dentist encouraged him to get implants. The ballpark price for what was suggested was roughly the same as the cost of a nice new car. He got a second opinion from his sister's dentist and was told that there was about a 30% failure rate for the type of work he needed, it would be painful, and the final results wouldn't make a lot of change in the appearance of his mouth -- he had two partial plates that were really well made, and he was very happy with them. He didn't get the implants.

If you question the recommendation, go for a second opinion.

I had a molar that become infected. I had a really bad cold that turned into bronchitis. Bacteria got under a crown and the tooth had to come out. My implant required a bone graft because the bacteria went to the bone. Between the tooth extraction, bone graft, healing time, post implant, more healing time and crown.....about 18 months and $3700.00 not including the crown. Insurance paid for about 70%. In my case it was worth it because it is a back tooth and there was an issue of causing wear and tear on the teeth other side.

But I would still never have this sort of thing done overseas. I just don't think saving a few thousand dollars is worth the potential issues you can face. But to each his own.
That's the point I am considering. I myself know lots of persons who have undergone their treatment at overseas clinics and happy with them. But what's more reasonable when yr budget is limited- national treatment at standard clinics or overseas treatment at top-rated clinics?

Note to those considering having this done overseas.. My bone graft failed and I had to have it redone today. Thankfully, it was covered because I had it done at the same dentist. So, unless you're planning to spend 3+ months abroad, plan to possibly spend more money than expected if something goes wrong and you need to get it fixed locally. That said.. this hurts way worse than the original surgery. :(

This depends so much on your location. The oral surgeon we refer to charges $1200 for a single implant then refers back to the general dentist for the crown which can be $800 and up. There are different kinds of implants too so it will depend on which will work for you.
