I went to the dentist after putting it off for so long. I had to have a tooth extracted and an infection treated. I"ve cancelled this appt. at least 3 times. It was nothing. I feel so much better and it's only been a couple hours. It too two non-painful injections and under 5 minutes and the tooth was out. So if you have this fear take heart. Things are so much better at dentists then they used to be. The oral surgeon told me they've learned alot about where to place injections today.

So glad you had a good experience! I was dental phobic for years, kept putting things off, naturally that led to some pretty serious dental problems. It took me a couple tries, after I finally decided to deal with it, but I got myself a wonderful dentist. I had two root canals and an extraction all on the same day, and it never hurt *at all*!! I was eating crackers within two hours and ate normally at my next meal. Yay for great dentists!!! :yay:

Oh me too! Just had an extraction this week too. But they put me to sleep cuz I am such a baby. It went a lot better then I expected and I wish I wouldn't have put it off.

UGH!!
I'm having problems right now with a tooth that need to be removed. I had a root canal on it last year that didn't work.

He had finished the root canal, but didn't put the crown on it..not even a temp. he said we needed to wait a week and let it settle??

Well during that week I bit down on it wrong and broke it. He fixed it it, but when I still had pain in my jaw he said it was fractured too bad and needed to come out. I haven't been back since! The tooth itself doesn't hurt, but my jaw aches from time to time. I've got $3,000 out of pocket in this tooth! :guilty:

:rolleyes1 I too am afraid of Dentists. Have had some bad experiences and scared to go back. I am more afraid to go to sleep or have anything that will make me not know what is going on.
The shots don't bother me as much as the drilling etc. Don't know what to do except have all of my teeth fall out. :teeth:

Sounds like you need a new dentist! I'd make appt's with a few people, and go in just to meet them, without doing any actual work. Tell them you're phobic cause of bad past experiences, they should be pretty understanding. And if they're not, they're not the right dentist for you anway! Good luck!!!

I ABSOLUTELY HATE the Dentist! I also have the worst teeth..wonder if there is a connection there? :confused3 ;)

I finally found a dentist that I love..still hate to go but he will call me in a script for 2 valium when I'm coming in to see him. I take one at night and 1 an hour before my appt. Someone has to drive me but at least they aren't having to haul me over their shoulder and drag me in *and yes dh had to do that too me once when the dentist forgot to call me in the script on the day I was getting a tooth pulled. Poor dh told Dentist if he ever forgot to call me in a script again dh would be there making sure the Dentist hauled me into the office. LOL

It all started thanks to my pediadontist who when he'd pull my teeth he'd tell me...now I'm just going to give this tooth a wiggle and then he'd yank and it felt like my whole head went with the tooth. Still cringe about the sound and feel of him pulling my teeth.

I have had more dental work done in my mouth than my whole family combined. My teeth spontaneously combust in my mouth without me doing anything. Just sitting watching a show and I'll feel a piece of tooth in my mouth and sure enough another tooth exploded.

Glad you got through it so well.

man oh man, i love the DIS... you all make me feel so normal! I'm also scared to death of the dentist, i need TONS of work :sad2: when i finally did get the courage to go to one, he was such a jerk to me, made me feel like a bad little girl. i'm totally scared outta my mind of the shots and just want to be put under general anesthesia and get everything done at once. i wonder if that's possible?

Tiggeroo I hear ya, I hate the dentist too. Glad to hear that you are doing OK. I think the thing is to find a really good dentist. I found a wonderful office with two very caring dentists and a group of the best people. It has helped me so much. I have had a lot of dental problems and in the past year, had to have a tooth extracted (after a very old root canal went very bad!) and an implant. My new dentist made it easier for me. I still look back and can't believe I actually went through what I did!! So for anyone as scared as I was, please look for a caring dentist. It will make a world of difference.

DM, that's what i'm saying. I made myself very sick over the past year because of this tooth. I was constantly taking antibiotics and ibuprophen. Now I have serious stomach problems because of this. I just need to keep telling myself it wasn't that bad. Because now I'm going to go to the regular dentist while I have no problem and get everything done. Do this for yourself. Bad teeth and gums effect your heart. It's not worth dying over.

No dentist fear here but I am in DENTAL HELL. I went to a seemingly smart lady. She messed me up getting a crown!!!!:furious:

I saw another dentist and he thinks my nerves are reacting to the injections. Honestly he had no clue and told me I need to see an ORAL SURGEON! I am calling on Monday.

I have swelling in my gum & cheek and numbness on the side of my face.:scared:

I did go to my primary first and he put me on Augmentin just in case. I do think I have an infection.:furious: :furious: :furious:

I think they've made some progress in the areas of discomfort over the past few years. I also think these doctors are more aware of the fear that so many patients have. If going to your dentist freaks you out, shop around for a new one. :)

My dentist also gives me a prescription for valium so I can take one the night prior and the morning of any dental work. I hate the sound of the drill. Honestly I hate the sound of just having to go to the dentist but at least the valium makes it tolerable.

:cool1: Yeah!!!! I'm so glad you went and that it went well. :thumbsup2
