That if the democratic nominee is Hillary or Barack we may wind up with a republican president?
When it comes down to the big VOTE too many people will vote for the white male?
Ignorance may be bliss but it could also be the straw that breaks the back of America.

Frankly..I am more than a little nervous about this.

(FYI...there is very little difference between John Edwards and Barack Obama)

wait? there's republicans running this year?

Not worried at all. Of course, some will make race or gender an issue, but most will not, imho.

Count me in, this dawned on me quite a while ago. It's sad to think that this country may still turn down a candidate strictly because they're African American or Female.

A more optimistic thought is that, because of the folly of our current president, there's never been a better time to elect the first Woman or African American president. This notion is not out of the question.

It's required by law that they field one. It makes it seem like a fair election. And we all know how Republicans feel about fair elections.

yes, count the votes until the outcome goes your way....

no wait a second, that was the Democrats

To the OP, I think whether the Dems take the white house has nothing to do with the color of the nominees skin or their gender, and more to do with policy.

Just look at how Edwards polls nationally against the various Republican candidates...and he's the standard political WASPian white guy...

I like Edwards, but would support Obama or Clinton if they became the nominee.

It doesn't worry me too much. I do not want to offend anyone, but most everyone I've met who would not vote for someone because of their race or gender were not Democrats and wouldn't vote for a Democrat, anyway.

Yes, actually it does worry me some. There are a lot of ol' timers out there who cannot wrap their minds around either a black president or a female president.

I thought so too. Then my DH's grandma shocked the socks off of me by making some kind of offhand comment that she wouldn't vote for Hillary and didn't think we should have a woman president. :scared1:

I about choked on my drink. She's a lifelong democrat and I realize she's almost 90, but it just brought me around to realizing that there really are people in this world who still think that way.

I was watching a special on CMT about girls trying out to be Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and one of the women auditioning said about the same thing! And you have to imagine that most of the people who really feel that way wouldn't be willing to admit it publicly.

So heaven only know what's really going on in people's heads. As much as I'd like to have faith in my fellow citizens, I'm definitley worried.

Wait a second. You are in Chicago right? Where the theme is "Vote Right, Vote Often"? (And for those who don't know, "Vote Right" does not mean vote Republican)

I think the country would elect a woman (many states have women governors and reps in congress), though I'm not sure if they'll elect Hillary.

I think I'll make that into a bumper sticker. :)

The race or sex of the nominee has NOTHING to do with if they will be elected or not. Iowa proved that. Obama could easily be the next President. If he is the nominee, the only thing that might mess that up would be a Bloomburg ticket as an Independent. The only way Hillary gets to be President is if Bloomburg takes enough votes away from the Republican.

Hillary does not even have the full support of her party. She would not get all the votes from their. In an election she gets almost no moderate votes and absolutely no Republican votes.

I don't know what the party that is supposed to be so broad-minded just doesn't get it. People don't like Hillary because she is a woman, people don't like Hillary because she is Hillary.

Granted, there are some from the far, far right that will not vote for her because she is a woman or who won't vote for Obama because he is black, but those votes are truly insignificant. So he doesn't win one or two of the states from the NorthWest. Wow. I can see the concern from those 3 electoral votes. :rolleyes1

Wait. What?!

There is a world of difference between these two men. Was that a joke or do you want us all to vote for Edwards so everyone will vote for the 'safe' white male?

Hopefully I'm just reading into the sentence. I do that a lot.

To the original question: I would probably worry about this if the current president was not a Republican. But I'm not all that worried since he's not. Besides I was extremely worried about the last election--going as far as to consider moving to Canada--that just about any alternative is better to me.

You know what, there has been so much animosity being thrown around regarding political affiliation that actual discussion has been utterly stifled. It is beginning to seem to me as if this election is more of a popularity contest than the election of one of the most powerful world leader's alive.

I, for one, am sick to death of this "we hate you".... "noooooooo, we hate you way more".... "nooooooooooo we hated you first" back and forth childish nonsense. I mean, it accomplishes nothing and allows our politicians free reign because no-one is actually listening to a single thing they say... on either side.

As for me, the color of someone's skin or gender mean nothing. Words and actions count.

ITA. There's so much animosity on both sides with yelling, insults, and petty put-downs sometimes it makes me want to seek out the Libertarians. Whatever happened to respectful disagreement? I mean, if Orrin Hatch and Ted Kennedy can form a working friendship and Bono and Jesse Helms can find common ground on charity work, why can't the rest of us turn it down a few notches?

I'm not offended, but bothered, that so many people think that way. Dh and I are Rebublican, but we both grew up in very strong Democratic families. I have very strong feelings about racism and gay bashing. I fight our family members all the time (particulary my crazy sister and dh's father and brother) about their prejudices. I won't allow certain words around my kids, and they just don't understand what the problem is. Believe it or not, one of the major goals of alot of the white democrats I know is to continue as much social aid as possible to keep certain groups "in their place." And some of these people I'm talking about are not only involved in politics, but have been in office. Alot of what is said is nothing but lip service.

I really don't like Hillary (and not because she is a strong woman as many people try to state-I am a strong woman!). I just don't trust her. I do like Obama (even though everyone I speak to argues he is Muslim! I can't even convince dh that he isn't!). I would not be devastated if he was the next president. But due to my conservative views on other issues, I would rather have a more moderate Republican in the White House.

I agree with you but there are a lot of people that you haven't met that don't feel that way.

We may know what we are doing. We may know what our issues are and why we are voting for the candidate that we are but many, many people really do not understand what is at stake and which candidate is best for this country.
And what's worse....it spreads..... "My aunt said X is best so I'll vote for X and so will my husband." Well, her Aunt may not even know what she is doing....so there is 3 votes for X based on "?".
Multiply that by whatever. Its not that uncommon.

And worse than that would be those that support Hillary or Barack, and then the "non white male" fear hits them at the last second in the booth at the election....they vote for the white male.

After the re-election of President Bush....I am sorry, I don't exactly see this as unlikely. Four years of disaster and what the heck....give him 4 more. :sad2:

Those are the ones, and their numbers are more than a few scattered here and there around the country and totaled up with the republicans voting republican, it may just push the republican over the top.

:scared1: And that scares me.

Just Imagine...... if you dare......

Ok, but do you include things like this thread as well? How is that not an insult to those who lean right? To say that we would rather vote for any white male instead of a female or black candidate. So, again like in 2004, the left votes after a well balanced look at the issues, and comes to an understanding of what they want, and the right votes based on the sex, color, race of the nominee and are nothing but toys to be used by the vast right wing conspiracy.

I am quite sure the OP did not mean this when she started the thread, but that is one way it could easily be looked at.
