OK, family of five torn between renting points to stay at 2 bedroom villa or stay in a deluxe. Can anyone please tell me what I'm missing? It would actually be cheaper for me to rent points. It doesn't seem like to many people do that. For all of you that have a large (by Disney standards) family please help.

I think most people don't rent points because they don't know about them. If you look at the cash price of a 2 bedroom villa they are very expensive. If I were you (but I'm a DVC owner), I would rather stay in the villa because of the space that you have and that full kitchen is great. Even if you only eat breakfast in the room you would save money there. We usually do breakfast and most dinners in the villa and eat a nice lunch out in the parks. You also have a washer/dryer in the room so you can do laundry during your stay. You have all the features of the deluxe that you are staying at (the themed pool, the quiet pool, the shops, the restaurants). I think it is a great idea to rent points.

We rented points for a 2BR at OKW in Oct'03. We loved it soo much we decided to buy DVC and now own at SSR. It was for me & DH, and his parents and brother. I highly recommend staying there. The 2 BR was very large and had 2 full bathrooms, including a Jacuzzi in the master suite. There were 2 queen size beds in the other BR and a pull out couch in the LR. Lots of room to spread out! And OKW was so peaceful!

I am renting points this fall for our trip (in the hopes of convincing my DH to buy into DVC) Our first 2 nights we will be in a room at the BWI before we move next door to BWV. Really you need to look at price per point and the price of a standard room. Is there a package deal out there, like the "free dining add on"? If $ is not the issue then by all means go for the villa!! The extra room is great! And having a full kitchen and washer and dryer are a lifesaver. In the end it always comes down to dollars and cents and which do you have... more money or more patience when waiting for the only bathroom?! :teeth:

We are a family of 5 and LOVE the DVC villas!

We have stayed at the BW and the BC. The 2BR villas have a lot more room than a deluxe room! You basically get a deluxe room (2 queen beds & bathroom) PLUS a kitchen, living room, Master bedroom (king bed) and master bathroom!

housekeeping - dvc are timeshares and timeshares don't have FREE housekeeping. you can pay for it and add it to your room bill.

views at the Polyn. I think the Polyn has some of the best views of property. No DVC resort has a view like the Polyn does. the BWV probably has some of the best views (although I preferred OKW)- but only in their preferred Bw views.

the monrail - GF, Polyn and Cont all have the monrail. At present no DVC resort is on the monrail.

now do I think the above the reasons are enough for you not to take a 2-bedroom or a hotel room. NO WAY!!! you get so much more room in a 2-bedroom plus the washer/dryer - no to mention the full kitchen. the TV in the livingroom has a DVD/VCR in most rooms.

We're a family of 5, and have stayed in both villas and deluxe resorts. We much prefer the space and ammenities of the villas. It's just a much more relaxing vacation for us to have the extra space.

I haven't really "cooked" yet in the kitchen, but it's nice to have the full size fridge, and we always eat breakfast in the room. Love the king size bed, big jacuzzi tub, split bathroom, 2 or 3 TVs, dvd player. You get the idea. :teeth:

Don't be afraid of the point rental process. Just do your research first and make sure you are comfortable with the transaction. We rented points for our first DVC stay, and loved it so much we became owners after that trip. :goodvibes

The other thing to be aware of is that renting DVC points is a private transaction. Disney will not get in the middle if you get scammed (if you rent points from this board, getting scammed is highly unlikely, but the DIS will not get in the middle either). DVC members have a lot of restrictions regarding cancellations that the "regular resorts" don't have, so the terms for your DVC rental will probably be 50% up, 50% 30 days out, no refunds if you need to cancel less than 30 days out. While a lot of people rent points and are very happy, others are not content with the terms.

We always rent points for our stay. It's the most cost effective way to stay deluxe-- especially on those Sun-Thurs night stays where the points needed are a lot lower.

How does one go about renting points?

We are owner of DVC at BCV. The 2 bedroom is great with kids. Being able to feed children whenever they are hungry is great.... and when aren't they hungry? The washer/dryer is wonderful. We only need to pack half of what we need and throw a load in. It is the size of 3 hotel rooms (Master, Kitchen/livingroom, 2nd bedroom). Definately a great choice.

As far as the down side of renting points for a DVC villa is the fact that you are doing a personal transaction with a DVC member, not Disney. Usually things go very smothly but you never know there may be a bad apple in the bunch. I don't want to scare you off but just to be aware that the member has full control over the reservation. Also, you are working working within DVC's timeshare rules using a member's points. There is penality for the owner if the reservation is cancelled within a month from the trip. With using points for the reservation you get very limited housekeeping. Every owner sets their own terms, but I would expect to pay a portion when the reservation is made and then the rest some time before that month mark. When I rented points to someone it was 50% deposit and 50% at 60 days before the reservation.

points rent generally from $9 to $14 per point.

OKW is the less moneywise but has by far the largest rooms - especially the 1 or 2 bedroom. It is the originially. but Disney kepts their properties up and since member are paying for the maintence - disney definitely kepts that up.

Hope you find something you like.

Pop over to the DVC Rent/Trade Forum. Read all of the "Sticky" threads at the top of the page. Ask any questions you may have on the DVC Vacation Club Forum.

Then figure out your dates, resort, room size wanted and use the charts to calculate the number of points you need. Post your "Want Ad" on the Rent/Trade Forum and see what happens.

You may want to read the other posts from the member you are working with to see if you are comfortable working with him/her. Renting requires trust on both sides of the transaction. Be sure you understand the member's cancellation policy - it will not be the same as Disney! Most members consider renting to be a non-refundable deal. Ask about the housekeeping schedules, too.

Good luck!

I agree 100% with barb45. When we have stayed at a DVC resort beacuse we have needed the extra space, it is great to have the washer/dryer, larger master bath, a living area that differs from the sleeping area and we stop by the store on the way there to get breakfast foods and snack foods. It's nice to have some to snack on in the late evenings when places at other resorts are closed.

I am staying in a 1 bedroom at the Wilderness Lodge Villas for 10 days in March and they have listed when housekeeping will be there. When I toured the 1 bedrooms a few years ago I couldn't get over the size of the master bathroom for some reason. In the morning with 2 people getting ready at the same timem it's just really nice to have a larger space.

If you rent points and have questions, don't be scared to ask. Alot of the folks on the renter's board are nice people and can help alot. Now the housekeeping thing will take a little getting use to because when on vacation, the last thing I want to do is keep house but it's a small price to pay for all the extras that come with staying at a DVC resort.

Something else you may want to do is on your next trip if you vote to stay in a non-DVC resort, take some time and go tour the one and two bedroom villas while you are there. You will be amazed at the difference in size and some of the extras! Renting points can save you a few bucks...

Without having read the responses, I don't much care for renting points simply because you have to have a lot of faith in people. You're putting your money in someone else's hands.

But then again, I don't have a party of more than 2 people. (Usually! :) ) My opinion might change if I did.

If a DVC unit on rented points works out better for you, I say do it! :)

We are a group of 13, renting for the first time this Fall.

The "fear factor" of renting is gone now.. Seems like a big first step, but we feel comfortable with it right now.

As mentioned, the only down side is "what if" we have to cancel or another unlikely event pops up. I feel confident that the person we're renting from would try to help, but the financial penality would, of course, be our responsibility.

Thank you! I've been struggling with having 5 people cram into a Deluxe resort. The cabins at Fort Wilderness don't appeal to me (my husband doesn't like to sleep in a double bed), and it is too expensive for us to book 2 deluxe rooms. :goodvibes

Thank you all for the responses. I do have someone willing to rent points to me for $11.00 per point. Now I just have to get the nerve up to do it. Thanks again.

Grumpty's Wife get a contract!!!

then you know upfront what your rights are.

Personally if I went a week, I would stay Sun-Thurs at a DVC hotel and then check into a deluxe, say the Poly on the weekend and do MK and Epcot only.

I have done both and OKW is by far my favorite family resort if you plan on being at the parks a lot and coming back for breaks. I would suggest using the money you save and renting a car though, you can park it right outside your door and get to any park quicker than any bus can get you there.
