deluxe person staying in value?? will I survive?

I didn't find the OP snobby at all, maybe because I "got" that what she meant by her title is that she enjoys staying at deluxe hotels. DH and I always stay at "deluxe" hotels, but for our upcoming trip we chose Pop. Why? Well, at WDW we spend no time at all in the hotel, we never go near a pool (so theming is irrelevant to us), it's just 2 adults, we don't need all that much room, so it just seemed like a better use of our money (and the airfare is costing us a pretty penny). On our last trip we stayed at the Swan on a great gov't rate, but it's not available for our dates, and frankly all we saw of the Swan was the lobby and the room. The location was superb, of course, but not enough to make it worth 4x as much as the Pop, ya know?

I am going into this adventure with open eyes and I think our expectations are realistic. We'll be renting a car anyway because we want to do a couple things in Orlando, so we're not worried about the buses. The only thing that I am slightly concerned about is the noise, but it seems to be 50-50 between those who find it noisy and those who don't, so I'm willing to take my chances ;)

All I have to say is ASSports....YUK!!!! Dirty, loud, a lot of unsupervised teenagers running and yelling and the rooms were very unmagical. We stayed there one night in May. Awful. I would try Pop. Heard good things about it.

The one thing I can say is they are SMALL. We are a family of 3 and we trip over each other. I have stayed at AS movies and music and will not do value again anywhere. The one good thing I have heard about pop is their buses are better than the other value due to not having to share. They are crowded and loud resorts.

Stayed at Movies 15 days - pay for 4 stay for 7 - several years ago. Returned again the next year. Grandkids and hubby love the place. Actually I did too. One of the BEST trips we ever had.
That being said I have also stayed off site, Poly, Ft Wilderness trailers, AKL, CSR and am heading back to AKL and Beach Club in Dec. This trip just 2 of us and celebrating 25 anniversary so we are spending a little more.
I missed not having a sit down restaurant at the values - but hop on a bus and go anywhere in the world you want. Being at the world is great- even if I had to sleep in my car. :rotfl: :rotfl: GO - Smile - Have Fun.

I hope you don't mind a long and I mean long hike to the main building from just about all of the rooms at POR AKA Dixie Landings. People complain about the values being a long hike POR is way worse for that IMHO. The grounds are nice there but it is the retirement home of the moderates just like OKW is the retirement home of the DVC and deluxe resorts. We are DVC members and to be honest our favourite resorts on property are the All Stars we try and stay there every trip even if just for the weekends there is nothing like the atmosphere of a value resort all teh excitement from the families and the nois of the kids enjoying a trip to Disney that IMHO is what Disney is all about.

just back!!! and you are 100% right!!!! the walk is ridiculous to the main building. I loved the atmosphere, surroundings, which none of the values can offer. I loved the room but the walk to anywhere is beyond!!!!!!!

next trip if I can't afford deluxe will be checking into POFQ... Beautiful place as well with much less walking.

Why would anyone want to walk 10 min. to their room from a bus stop after just walking 8 hours in a park is beyond me!

You will be fine, we like some of the deluxe resorts and we don't mind value resorts at all. Have stayed at Pop a couple times, it is great. Bus service is great.

You did realize that you don't have to use the main bus stop, that there is more than one, right?

We've stayed at POR several times, and the longest walk we've had was 6 minutes from the furthest building, to the food court. We weren't rushing (we cut through the main pool area). So even if we used the main bus stop, it would have only been 6 minutes. But we didn't use the main bus stop, on the rare occasion we took a bus (rather than our car) we used a closer bus stop. Of course we didn't have little kids..just a 8 and 12 year old. That might have slowed us down. I should say too, we stayed on the AB side..you may have been at the mansions. Our walks to and from there have been very leisurely walks, and never timed.
We love looking at the landscape and feeling like we're all spaced out.

Our room was close to a bus stop but if you wanted to stop for a soda you had to go to the main building. Here in lies my problem. The walk back to the room was 10 minutes. Not what I wanted to do after a long day at the parks.

yes I did stay in AB prior to the mansions. Was in Bldg 18 which was extremely close to food courts but I found the room in mansions to be decored so much more nicer. Guess it is just a trade off .

Think POFQ is still a better choice all in all

I am having the same problem..I have stayed at all the deluxe and all the moderates I want to try something new like pop but I am afraid of being crowded...long walks..mom is in a wheelchair..the noise. But there is such an amazing difference in the price of a value that I am tempted to try it..I love the deluxe..not so much the animal kingdom lodge..I love wl..but we never stay in the room long at all..I was wondering though if you can get a roll away bed in pop ? The pop looks so cute and a room is a room right?
well I have a week to make up my mind...thanks

When considering walking distances and room location, is it worth it to pay for a "preferred location" room at POP, and what does that mean exactly? I am planning a girls only birthday celebration for my soon to be 7 year old daughter and don't want to have to walk very far after a long day (she might be sleeping and I would be carrying!). Got a great Florida resident rate of $64 per night. Just need to know if I should upgrade to the preferred location, total $27 more for two nights.

I am proud to consider myself a deluxe fan. I love full service hotels, central locations (monorail or epcot) and theming. Our favorite place is AKL, nothing compares to that atmosphere and beauty in my opinion. It is not a matter of snobbery at all. My husband and I work very, very hard and cherish our vacations. To me, I would rather spend the $ on hotels and great meals than on souveniers (never buy them). Just my opinions, not intended to question other people's values. We often stay at the Shades of Green (hubby served 26 years in USMC) because it is a deluxe hotel with a great price $106 no tax. But I still love to splurge.

Well the Sunday after Thanksgiving we leave for our first value stay as well. It's a surprise trip for the kids and I wanted something whimsical. So I chose POP. The entire package was less than our room only for the CR Tower in March. I'm like HEY! I can have MORE trips this way. So if we like it we will be able to squeeze in more trips during the year and I think we will all be cool with that! :goodvibes I've stayed deluxe, Mod and SOG. I think that we will all enjoy it but I am planning to write a full review when I get back from the viewpoint of someone staying at a value for the first time. (Not comparing them.) I hope that will be helpful for some that are trying to make up their minds for their first stay. I was also worried at first about my decision because the next day there were a slew of bad reviews about POP. I am now excited :Pinkbounc and think that it will be a great stay because we don't really spend that much time in the room and my son really does prefer the food courts which is why we typically end up at the CR as it has several options.

That is exactly why I stayed at POP last month, an EXTRA trip. They had the free dining and at $77.00 a night for the room I couldn't resist. There was a bit more walking but we needed to walk off the bit more food! :rotfl:
It was quiet and adorable. Whenever I take an extra trip I will be booking POP!

Yes! This Nov is an extra trip that we didn't even plan until the Nov/Dec discount came out. This is a first on many levels for us. It's our first package (have always used AP's before) and our first try at dining package. Since we typically eat TS once a day anyway I think that we will really enjoy it. As I said the entire package came out to such a great rate that I couldn't resist a surprise trip down to see the christmas decorations and of course our very first MVMCP!

only staying 3 nites...& figured we would spend total time in parks..
booked pop century...

will I be okay there?
any suggestions?
how is bus service

going next week

We always stay at deluxes. The resort is an important part of our vacation. We drive to Orlando from NJ and usually take one long trip a year. If we are on site for 10 days, we will likely spend at least 2 days lounging at the resort. So a fun pool, recreation options and good restaurants are important. I would go nuts relaxing an entire day at one of the Allstars.

But if we were only going three nights, I think I'd be tempted to try a mod or a value too. I would expect that we would use the resort just to sleep. Most meals would be in the parks. So why pay for a deluxe?

Let us know how you make out.

If you pick POFQ don't forget to ask for a close room. We had bld7 last year and it was a long walk to the pool/food court area.

My DS loved the pool area and we enjoyed the theming so we'd return but would ask for a bld closer to the pool area.

Have to admit though the WL is our favorite

I, too, think it's a matter of expectations. I think some of the longhouses at the Poly are farther away from the monorail and/or bus stop than many of the Pop buildings. We have stayed at several deluxes, own DVC, camp at FW, stay in the cabins at FW, and CSR, and POR (I'm a hot tub snob) ;) All of that said DH and I have thoroughly enjoyed our 3 or 4 day stays at Pop. And we always get the far 80s or 90s buildings! I just hope that 50s with Lady and the Tramp is in my future.
