Am I reading this right/ Does Delta charge a $50 fee to do a same day stand by?

I'm asking because when we fly to Orlando in a few weeks, we fly through Atlanta. And we have a long layover, as it was a lot cheaper than the shorter ones. However, there are a few other flights that leave Atlanta before ours. It is not possible to hop on one of those (if they have room) without paying the $50?

You did read it right, it will be a $50 per person fee to switch to an earlier flight unless you have "status" (i.e. a very frequent flyer) with Delta.

Ok thanks. I'm not thinking landing an hour early if MCO would be worth the $150. Guess we will stick with the plan of having a leisurely breakfast in the airport. Thanks!

Delta doesn't do "standby". If there's room on a flight and you want it, they charge you $50, but it's a confirmed seat.

They might do free standby if you've missed a connection and they're trying to get you out, but not when it's your choice.

They have waived the fee on occasion. My DD(19) has had luck with that a few times. She has always been traveling alone though. You can always go to the gate and ask and if they say no, you're no worse off. (And expect them to say no.)

Ok. So it sounds like it doesn't hurt to ask. We will see what our mood is, and if the guys (I'm traveling with my 23 year old nephew and a friend of his) want to try, or just relax at the airport.

Thanks everyone!

You can get free standby if they cannot confirm a seat (the flight is full). You just have to wait around the gate until everyone boards and see if there are any no shows. I tried it a couple times and didn't get on. Typically there are people ahead of you who are doing standby because they missed a flight and they have priority.

That is a lot of tension and if you don't get on, you wasted your time. I would just go and have a relaxing breakfast.
