On our flight itinerary on Delta has my family sitting together. When I bought the tickets I didn't pay extra to choose seats. If they have us assigned together then we should be fine right?!

You only pay extra on Delta if you choose "economy comfort" seats (not all flights offer these slightly roomier seats). When I book on Delta, I choose my seat(s) then. Once DH and I were moved (not from economy comfort--just regular economy seats) to a few rows back from our original seats. Not sure why--but we still sat together.

In a nutshell, you should be fine! Be sure, if you can, to do online check-in 24 hours prior to your flight to confirm.

Watch your flights. If there is a flight change, your seats could be changed. For example, if the plane goes from a 3 x 3 to a 3 x 2 or a 2 x 2, people will be moved. One time I was flying with a friend and we were in the 2nd row of coach. There was a plane change and they kept us together but moved us to the back of the plane! There were still plenty of seats in the front. So I moved us back.

Aircraft changes are the most likely culprit when your seating changes. The computer tries to give you "same type" seating, but if flight is very full, not everyone will be accommodated.

Also, beware if you are traveling with someone, but not booked in the same reservations. When those a/c changes happen the computer will not "know" that you are together, and you could get reseated rows apart. If you booked online and gave your email address, you will be notified each time this happens. You can log into your reservation and try to fix it then.

If all else fails, be very nice to the agent at the gate with you make your request for seating change. They will usually be able to help you out.

Our flight changed once and our seats stayed together. We are less than 2 weeks out so I'm hoping for no further changes.

Our flight changed 4 times, yes 4 times and we are still 16 days out. I am in the reserved seating ( the area you pay $49.00 extra ) and our seats have been changed 4 times, yes 4 timesand all over the plane ( except 1st class) Every time I call them and they switch them back. Also, I have yet to receive one email notifying me of these changes, I just happen to view my reservation every three days. Very frustrating but I did get an awesome deal.:crazy2:

Sorry, I call BS. I've had seats changed by Delta the last three times I've flown with them... I've NEVER gotten an email about the change. I find out by logging in to their website and checking every so often.

I have a flight to DL next month, I've received e-mails about flight changes, the last one yesterday.

Not sure why you seem to not be getting your notifications. It will make a difference who you book with. You have to book directly with the airline for them to send you notifications. If you book thru an agency (which orbitz/expedia would be considered) or other online sources, Delta will notify them of the changes (because they are the booking source) and expect them to let you know as part of their service to you. In my experience, these are the situations when changes go unadvised and you find out when you get to the airport (or check for yourself online).

I book straight through the airline (no agency). The first time it happened, I made sure my email was correct online. I do get the "it's time to check in" emails. I don't get the change emails, and yes, I do have checked 'notify me for changes'.

ETA: I just checked for the flights I booked for our trip next June. The seats have changed on every flight. It's easy to tell, because I book a window seat, and there's not one window assigned. I went to the 'edit contact info', and my email address is gone and the phone number for texting is wrong. So it seems like Delta isn't keeping my contact information (and yes, I've entered it MULTIPLE times).

I'm going to back up Sam Gordon here. the notifications I get from Delta are random and sporadic. Last time we flew my husband got the notifications based off his sky miles number even though I had book all the tickets using my email attached to the reservation. Even though my sky miles number was on the reservation I never got a single notice. This current trip, he'll get a notice of time change on a Tuesday, I'll get it (if at all) days later.

Their notification system is screwy.

You just can't depend on any airline notifying you about changes. You need to occasionally check your reservation yourself.

oh well, of course. I don't think anyone is disputing that. I check all the time and it looks like Sam Gordon checks. I think we were both commenting on this post:

Notifications don't always happen the way they're supposed to happen. It is up to the user to check and verify. You cannot rely on the airline to do it.

Exactly. In the grand scheme of things, not being notified when there's a change is a minor annoyance.

Me, too. Delta sends me lots of sales information, but rarely do I receive e-mail when they change my seat or flight times. I always seem to get the notifications for check-in and delayed flights. We've just learned to check occasionally (and more frequently closer to the flight day) to make sure things aren't screwed up. More than a couple of times Delta has changed my flights such that there was no way I could catch a connecting flight -- they never seem surprised when I call to say that I can't catch the connection since my original flight won't have landed yet.

I get notified of time changes, even just a minute or so, but never of seat changes.

To the OP, I do not want to worry you, but Delta can and will change assignments at any time. I recently had my seat assignments taken away and not just moved for a flight that I had already done an online check-in. That was quite a shock. We were first at the gate agent and did manage to get seats together but at the back of the plane. The only thing to do is be very nice to the agent and hopefully they can put one adult with each child.

My last flight (not with Delta), I paid extra to choose seats at the time we purchased the tickets. I chose seats so the entire family was together. I checked in early. I had the boarding passes printed when we checked our bags at our resort (AKL). We boarded the plane together. My husband got up to use the restroom in the plane, and a young boy came and sat in my husband's seat. My son was sitting between me and the young boy, so, I called across "hey, you're in my husband's seat!". I called over the flight attendant to mediate, because, apparently, they had seated some people who were displaced somehow from another flight, and had assigned this kid to my husband's seat. At this point, I didn't know if the flight was completely booked, or where my husband could sit (he had the aisle seat). My husband took the aisle seat the row ahead of the one he was assigned, because, apparently the other two kids in the row were siblings. Possibly, the kid had been in the seat my husband took, but, he was OK with an aisle seat in a different row. But, you have to watch the airlines, and I would have made some noise about if my husband had to sit in a middle seat after paying for an aisle seat 6 mos ago.

On delta you don't pay extra to pick your seat. The only upcharge would be to get a better seat. But everyone picks seats for free.
