Has anyone payed the extra money to have the new economy comfort seats Delta is offering? Is it worth the extra$29.00?

Depends on how long the flight and, more importantly, how big you are. If you're a large (tall) person then the extra leg room is probably worth it. If you are of average height then you may do just fine in the regular seats.

My husband upgraded himself and my teenage son on our trip back home from MN while my daughter and I got stuck in the back of the plane - needless to say I was pretty annoyed with him.

He said it was totally worth the upgrade cost and would do it again.

We recently flew Delta on a last-minute vacation. There weren't any seats available in the sardine section, and the $29. variety were also full. I had to cough up an extra $59 just to get a seat. It was bulkhead so yes I had leg room, definitely better than sitting out on the wing, but I still thought it was a rip-off. Plus we had to pay baggage fees.

Next trip we're flying Southwest.

No one HAS to buy an economy comfort seat. Perhaps you are confusing the fact that in order to get a seat assigned when you purchased, you had to select one for a price? If you hadn't done so, you would have been assigned a seat the day of the flight when the seats that are held for airport assignment were released.

Sometimes paying a little more for the upgraded economy seats is a good deal - clearly if you want the room it is, but it can also give you earlier boarding access (good if you have carry-on baggage) and on some airlines in some airports, it can give you priority lane access for going through security (like flying Jetblue through JFK - buying an "even more space" seat means you get to use their "even more speed" lane in security).

Thanks. I KNEW I should have asked here first. Why does Delta hold back some of the seats for airport assignment?

The irony is that we had zone 1 boarding our flight from Atlanta to Phx, but DH spent so much time getting takeout at the food court that we were among the last to board. :sad2: By the time we finally boarded, there was no more room for our carry-on bag so it had to be gate-checked. I had both boarding passes or I would've been tempted to go ahead without him.

WE did on a delta international flight a few months ago. It was 80 each way, and yes it was worth it. Hubby is 6'4". Just check out seatguru for some advice. The front row has immovable middle bars which limits the seat width. There was definately more leg room, and they did recline further. We felt very comfortable.

Thanks for the replys. I did go ahead and paid for the comfort seats. It was $29 each seat. It will just be DH and I traveling so it was only $60 each way.

All airlines hold seats for airport assignment (except SW who does not assign). They have them in case there are issues with seats, maybe another flight is cancelled and they have to move people. Or someone handicapped needs a certain seat. It also hides the fact that they overbook.

We got them for our recent trip to Europe. Well worth the money on the 9 1/2 hour flight each way. I don't think that I would spend the money on a less than 5 hour flight though.

I just paid for them for a red eye to NYC (just over 5 hours flying time). I thought it was very worth it as did my long-legged husband. Slept as well as I could expect to on a flight and did not have someone's head in my face when the person in front of me reclined their seat.
