Delta preferred seating

Just trying to figure out what the criteria are for getting to choose preferred seats on a Delta flight. Is it related to being a Sky Miles member or something? Thanks!

True. Only the elite (Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond) have this opportunity. Fortunately my wife and I have managed to reach the lowest of these rungs for many years now.

If it was all skymiles members, the entire plane would be preferred since signup is free.

I flew over 25,000 miles last year to earn my silver status.
