DD is flying on Delta in July. She got a recorded message from Delta asking her to go onto their website and enter the ID# from whatever official ID she will be using when she boards the plane, in this case, her driver's license. I have not heard of this before. Is this becoming the norm now?

The kicker was she went to the website, followed the instructions and when she went to click on the link to enter the number, the link was not working.

Is she flying international?

otherwise ignore it! Delta's IT is run by people only marginally better then those hired by Disney!

It sounds to me as if there could be a *possibility* that that could have been a phishing message. Have her check her credit report, just in case.

An international flight would require a passport number, not a DL#, and TSA uses a combination of your full name and birthdate.

I just looked on Delta's website.. I can't find ANYPLACE to legitimately add a DL#. I think NotUrsula is right, she just got spammed.. Walk away or call Delta.

The strange thing is you don't need ID to board the plane. On international, you have to show your passport.

You don't need an ID to board a plane, but you do have to have ID to get through security before you get to the plane.
All airlines have to verify your identity before you can fly. We use Airtran and it will show "verified" once they verify our Name and DOB through the gov'ts system.

Well, you aren't going to board if you don't get past the TSA and they want an ID :)

But TSA is not connected to your airline reservation unless they are going to print your ID# on your boarding pass. I think if they were going to start requiring that, we would have heard about it.

I book for my family on Delta.com all the time. When you book you need to enter each passengers name (as it would appear on your govt issued ID), your gender and date of birth. For domestic travel, you do not enter the number of the ID into the system. For international travel, you scan your passport into the check in podium to verify that document.

I am suspicious about someone asking for DL number....

I fly Delta a lot and they have never done this to me. "Scam" comes to mind. I'd call Delta myself and ask. Use their published 800#, not the # from the recording.

Airlines are not required to verify one's identity. they do have to submit the info for a check against the "no fly" list. they also do it to prevent ticket scalping.

And actually, TSA has a procedure for flyers without ID, so it is possible to fly without ID. http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/acceptable-ids

Yeah, if you like body searches (I had to do it once... lost my license. TOOK FOREVER to get through security, they searched EVERYTHING over and over again.. LOL!

Thanks for all your replies!

Update:

Apparently it was not the actual DL# they were asking for. They are asking for "secure passenger flight data" meaning, name as it appears on the ID she will be using, gender, and date of birth. And there now is a place to enter that information at the bottom of her itinerary. But my question is why do they need that when she already supplied it when she purchased the tickets?

DH still is not convinced it is not a scam, but DD got both an email and a voicemail from Delta including her confirmation number in both messages. And both messages gave Delta's correct 800 number to call. So she will be calling them to ask what it is all about.

No one else has been asked for this? Hmmmmm

Oh and it is not an international flight.

Generally I book my flights myself @ delta.com. That information is requested then. Here's the deal, the ticket name should match your ID. My given name is Katherine. That's on my DL and PP but I've gone by Kathie sometimes; BUT for travel purposes, one should use your name as it appears on your ID for domestic and international trips.

She booked it herself online with her name exactly as it is on her ID. She supplied her gender and DOB as well. So this action seems redundant.

Ummm...I wonder if there was a typo or maybe this is some sort of internal audit thing:confused3 Occasionally odd things happen--My last trip, I went to do my online check in for my flight and couldn't do it. I got a message saying I had to check in at the airport with the cc I used to buy the ticket. Never did find out what THAT was about.

The TSA Secure Flight program requires airlines to collect this information from passengers (for all flights, not just international flights). See http://www.tsa.gov/stakeholders/secure-flight-program.

Delta should have collected the information and relayed it to TSA at the time of booking. Presumably there was a glitch of some kind and it failed to do so. If that's the case, ignoring Delta's request to provide it again won't end well, since Delta won't be able to issue the passenger a boarding pass until it is.

It is not a scam. The airlines are all starting to ask you to supply secure passenger data. I don't see what the big deal is.
