looking for opinions on flying with Delta.
We usually fly Sourhwest, but Delta's fares are cheaper right now.

Delta is just as good at SWA but you will have to pay for luggage both ways. If you have to change or cancel a flight there is a $200 per person fee with Delta.

After a few really bad experiences with delta I avoid them like the plague - especially if it has to go through atlanta.

We fly Delta very regularly. They are fine and have the advantage of actually booking a specific seat. No need to check-in at 24 hours out or queue up to be sure of getting good seats together.

I was just talking to someone this morning who connected in Atlanta with no problems. When I used to fly a lot, if I had to choose a connecting city I liked Atlanta because they had a lot of flight options. Back then I flew mostly USAirways (now American) and Delta. I liked Delta far better.

If you only fly airlines where no one has a horror story.. you won't be going anywhere

I fly Delta, SW, USair etc... My only "you can't pay me to get on there" is Spirit!

(yes, folks I was once delayed for about 36 hours on SW so even they have horror stories LOL!)
Good points OCC. I've followed your conversations over on FlyerTalk so I know you travel a lot. We've had horror stories on DL as well but know that things happen that aren't in the control of the airline. We've always been treated well by the employees so we play their FF game by concentrating our flying on one airline. (I'm PM on DL)

The only people who I find have a problem with connecting at Atlanta, are the people who don't read the connection time when booking the flight and then figure 35 minutes will be sufficient to de-board, use the restroom, buy food and stroll leisurely to the next flight while checking their smartphones....only to be outraged when they arrive and find out, the flight has already been boarded and closed out for departure.

Atlanta is an airport I won't connect through unless the connection is longer than an hour. I don't want to be rushed getting to my connection gate.

We fly Delta through Atlanta quite a lot since from our local airport "all flights lead to Atlanta". (This is actually almost entirely accurate!). We've never had any major issues with Delta and really have never had any problems connecting in Atlanta. It's actually very well laid out compared to many airports I've been in. Just note that there is a "subway" to get from terminal to terminal, but if you get on that, it's pretty quick between them. My husband has made a 40 minute layover there, and it was his first time ever having a layover in Atlanta and made it just fine.

I'm reading this thread with interest, since I'll be taking my first Delta flight (and yes, it's through Atlanta!) in April. Totally agree with the PP who said that all airlines have horror stories. (Don't get me started again on American Eagle at DFW.)

I connected in Atlanta in 2013 on the old AirTran and did fine (don't remember my connection times, but I know coming back I had time to eat lunch at Atlanta Bread Co without rushing). This year, I have a nearly 3 hour connection going down, and 2 hours coming back (which is fine, because I want to be able to get something to eat, assuming all my flights are on time).

For me, the deciding factor on Delta was the large number of flights between my connecting airport and MCO (if heaven forbid I miss my connection down, I could hopefully get on one of the remaining 8 or 9 flights from ATL to MCO that day), and the fact that I can actually fly full fledged Delta jets the whole way. (Other options had me on American Eagle or United Express, and SW has very few flights and lousy schedules to/from my home airport.)

I've only been through ATL once, but totally agree, it is very well and logically laid out - plus it has a really good website that is a lot of help. I know OP is now looking at other options, but I just wanted to put in my 2 cents.

Agree with all that has been said. Atlanta is fine and just allow an hour at least for a connection.

Bad experiences on every airline but many good experiences on Delta. I've made many connections (more often than not) with my daughter since she was 2. Never an issue if you make sure the connection time is sufficient.
