I am not smart when it come to purchasing Computers. I only need one to Browse the net, do my occassional Ebay selling, and store photos and such. I would like a Laptop, that has a 17in screen and thats under $1000. I see two that I am interested in on Dell.com, The Studio 17 is $749, and the Dell Core is $999. If you are bored, can you please look on the site and recommend a Laptop for me.

Thanks in Advance!

Hi - Im surfing the web from my new ice blue Dell Inspiron laptop!! Got it from the Dell outlet - it was a refurb - 17 inch - beautiful!!! Under $500!!!:thumbsup2

Sorry, I would have to recommend going with something other than a Dell.

I'm personally an ASUS fan. My last three laptops have been ASUS ones. Dell would be my last choice. I have been in the computer repair field for years and I have seen WAY too many people burned by Dell. No brand is perfect, but they are definitely the worst in my opinion.

Ah, there are no more problems with Dell than there are with any other manufacturer. People are complaining about the waits from the pre-Christmas sales, but the outlet's stock is ready to ship.

I currently have an Inspiron model that I bought 2 years ago from Dell's outlet. Was about $600, but it was pretty loaded...more so than if I was building one myself.

They carry the full warranty.

We bought an HP Pavilion DV7 for xmas. I believe it was around $600 (sorry can't totally remember the actual amount). We LOVE it so far. It has windows 7, a large screen, A DVD recorder, blue ray player, TONS of memory and a huge hard drive. I honestly don't know that much about computers, but my DH certainly does. He writes software for a living and knows quite a bit about computers. He's even built a few. He did all the research and found this one to have the best components for the price. And just an FYI, he would NEVER pay much more than the $600 for a computer. He says unless you are wanting it to play large (think geeky) computer games, or constantly downloading huge files, you don't need the higher end ones.

lol - it so depends on your experience. My DH has been a tech in the computer field for 20 years now. He has seen so many ASUS motherboards and power supply go bad in the first year. Im sure anyone could give the same experience with Dell - also heard someone talking bout Apple and HP.

My laptop was ordered on Friday and Delivered on Wednesday!!!!! It is fully loaded too!!!!!!

If you've seen my previous post, you'd know I'm not real happy with Dell right now, however you cannot say that Dell is any worse than any other manufacturer based on share number of problem machines you've seen. You'd really have to know the percentage based on the number of computers built since Dell probably builds a much larger number of computers than ASUS.

I also bought a Dell Inspiron Laptop but with the 15.6 screen.

I had a hard time trying to decide what to upgrade. But settled on the better LCD screen and had Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements installed. Might have upgraded something else but can't remember right now.

I just brought my new HP laptop home, typing from it right now. so far I love it! It was $779, has a hard drive bigger then my HP desktop, more RAM, a blu ray player and it's a 17 inch, at least. LOL It's the dv7 and I really like it. :) We went a little higher end because we are somewhat geeky when it comes to our media. LOL

We bought a Toshiba laptop for $449 in August at Staples. Has 17 in screen and I don't know what all bells and whistles. We had planned on getting an HP for $399 but they were out.

We had a bad board but they sent us a box with a pre-paid shipping label...we sent it to their depot...they fixed it and returned it in about 7-10 days total. And we were able to track it's progress from start to finish. We haven't had any other problems and that one was probably just a fluke.

Same here. We bought two dell inspiron computers within 1 1/2 years the motherboards went out on them. i won't buy dell again, poor customer service.

I agree.

I bought a Dell Studio 17 last June and am very happy with it. Keep in mind that it is quite large and heavy and won't fit in a lot of laptop bags. It isn't a good choice if you are planning on taking it everywhere with you. It is an excellent replacement for a desktop.

i didnt say that ASUS has sold anywhere near as many laptops as Dell. Asus just recently started making their own machines after years of manufacturing hardware. All i said was that ASUS was my preference.

My bias towards Dell is not strictly laptops. I will not recommend anything Dell to anybody. By many, Dell computers are considered throw away computers due to the cheap hardware they use. In order to get the $200 computers out there on the market, they cut every corner they can. In my opinion they are about 1/2 step up from emachines.

DH is very computer savy and he and I both would never buy a Dell. My parents and sisters have been thru so many of them when DH and I had our orgnial laptops for years with no problems. Two year ago, I did give away my laptop to a family that really needed it for there daughter to go to college and did not have the money for a new one. It was an HP. In July of this year I got my new laptop (had been using our desktop) a HP TouchSmart and I love love love it!!! Mine is way smaller than what you want but I am very happy with HP. DH has a toshbia laptop that he has had since 05 and its still running very strong the only part he had to replace was the charger and that was a $30 on ebay so I would say that is great. My MIL for christmas got a New Toshbia laptop that has a bigger screen and it lightweight and doesnt have a cd drive. My DH says it is an awesome laptop and I know my FIL got it for a lil over $500. I guess I am saying I would recommend either Toshbia or HP.

I have to agree with the Dell comments, I like HP/Compaq and Toshiba better than the Dells.
HP and Compaq merged they are both good machines and the support has been good.

Dell has pretty good support but you have to jump though hoops sometimes and it can get frustrating but they usually come through.

E machines and Gateway are the same company now Gateway sold off the business line to Micron Personal Computers (MPC) and E machines took the consumer line. Some of their stuff is ok but generally lower cost for a reason IE: less memory less hdd etc.

There are some good deals on HP laptops floating around they are offering free upgrades on the ram and hdd on some models.

I hate my Dell. I purchased it in January of '09 and no one has been able to get it to work right and Dell has been awful to deal with. I am not sure what my next laptop will be, but it won't be a Dell.

Funny how everyone has there favorites, lol. I have had bad experiences with HP and Compaq Desktops, bought several that only last 2-3 yrs or less, so I will not rebuy those brands. I have a Dell Desktop now, its 6yrs old and still going, no issues, except being old. This is why I choose to stick with Dell. I realize that problems can happen with any computer, this is why I am going to buy the extra warranty. Oh, I've also had good customer service from Dell.
