We have a 2 year old DELL laptop and have never had any problems with it. However today I noticed that the battery won't charge past the halfway point. When I plus it in, the charging indicator goes on until it gets to the halfway point and then quits.

Any ideas as to what's wrong? How to fix it?
thanks!

Batteries don't have an indefinite lifespan. They wear out. Some do some faster than others. Some because they just happen to be defective, some because of how they are used. I would suggest getting a new battery.

It could be a Windows or driver issue with the communication to the battery, but I haven't seen that.

This happened to ours and we bought a new battery. Problem solved.

It might be the cord. That happened with my Dell laptop. The battery was fine. It was still under (extended) warranty so Dell sent me a new one. And we just got the new hard drive last week. So glad we got that extended warranty.

I have a Dell laptop too. 5 year old Inspiron E1505. I have had to replace the battery twice. They only last 18-24 months or so many charges. Now I am also having trouble with the power cord so that could be a problem as well. You can find batteries online at computer parts sites or battery sites cheaper than from dell.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I am in the market for a new battery. :(

Are there different kinds? I looked on the DELL website and the one that is for my computer has really bad reviews... are there different brands of batteries or is it best to buy directly from the computer company? :confused3

There are generic brands out there and they are just as good. It is the form factor that limits which batteries can be used so make sure you get a generic that specifically lists your model as compatible.

There has been talk of legislation restricting the use of proprietary battery form factors but I wouldn't hold your breath for that. If it does come it will be from the EU as they are the ones who are trying to legislate that all devices with a better must make that battery removable by the consumer without voicing a warranty. Steve Jobs doesn't agree :goodvibes

We have had 3 dell laptops and will never buy another. We had the same issue, and it was the connector thingy inside the computer. Dell replaced and then we had the same issues again. The tech that came out said it was a frequent issue.

We just got a new powercord adapter for one of our Dell laptops, it wouldn't charge the battery at all. On another Dell laptop, a Latitude D600, the screen keeps shutting off-just started this morning--any ideas???
