Hi all-First off- Yes, I was a little put off by the first person very nasty comments telling me I didn't plan etc. A few things-we are from NYC with no kids. We are not Disney freaks or huge park fans, but wanted to experience DL one time while visiting Hollywood for the week. We only had one day to visit a park, and our options were spring break weekend, or the Monday after. We were flying home the next day. Knowing crowd levels would be insane, I chose Monday. When checking schedules ahead (Yes, I did this) I saw fireworks every day including Mondays for 2 weeks leading up to our trip, but the 20th said "schedule not yet available". I thought it might be something they would add last minute, since I am so used to WDW having fireworks every night. I didn't even know it was possibility that they didn't do this. I was really disappointed because for me fireworks are what makes a park day at the end of the night-it's really my favorite thing at Disney. For moral reasons we had no interest in seeing a fountain show during a severe drought. In addition Indiana Jones and Matterhorn were closed, two things not at WDW which reflected my idea to maybe skip it.
So that said, since we were stuck in this yucky hotel and not able to cancel the second night, so we decided to go for our one day park hopper. We walked on many popular rides done early in the day before the place got really crazy busy around 12:30. At that point we should have switched parks and gone to CA for a beer and lunch to relax, but we kept pounding the pavement at DL.
We both started to feel like we were in living hell with people smacking our ankles with strollers, heat and wait times building. We tried to have fun but were really miserable for that few hours. The fun of a 2 minute ride couldn't really make up for the awful theme park mess outside of them. We didn't see the magic-we saw zombie like park guests being herded by some very smart Disney execs who are laughing all the way to the bank when people buy $35 sandwiches and souvenirs. The brand synergy they have in every ride is amazing from a business perspective. Disney is a very passive experience because the majority of the day is waiting in lines.
We finally switched to CA after using our Splash fastpass-at that point even more grouchy because we got drenched to the point of looking like we had gone in a pool with our clothes on. lol
Our first ride was Screamin and we were on in less than 5 minutes. It was our favorite ride in any of the parks such a great coaster. We then got to do some more adult things that were more our speed. Had some wine while watching the Pixar parade and refreshed awhile. CA in general had more of a vibe that we liked. Better thrill rides, more chill, less kids etc. We did Tower, and Screamin 2x as well as the Cars racer ride which we loved. At that point they were closing the areas unless people had a fastpasses to see WOC so we headed back to DL.
Getting back to DL around 7:30 we were able to squeeze in Mr Toad and Big Thunder. After 10 minutes in line for Jungle Cruise they announced the ride was closing because the lights inside were off but the animals were working. So that was the only one we didn't make.
Overall, we had an ok day but see DL for what it is more than "magic" which is really a great marketing slogan -as people who work in the movie industry we see soundstages often so that stuff isn't impressive to us.
I think Disney is more significant to people who maybe went as kids and have lot's of nostalgia around it. Or for people who have kids, I can see how it can be a destination. It also made me sad to see all of the girls dressed as princesses. It's such an antifeminist POV to press upon young girls-get married to a man and live happily ever after. I'm glad they have Elsa now who isn't such a stereotype. I'd love to see some little girls dressed as Peter Pan or boy characters but Disney had pressed into there minds the opposite is how things should be.
We are glad we experience DL once for historical reasons but wouldn't make it a point to go back to any Disney Park for many many years.
