I think you will be just FINE. First, this is the very early stages of the "crack down" if, indeed, there even is one. It *appears* as though DVC is getting ready to enforce rules that have been in place forever (i.e.: no commercial renting, only one transfer per year, etc.).

Many of us here on the DIS have been aggressively complaining about a few particular commercial renters, and several have sent complaint letters to DVC ask them to please put a stop to commercial renting. However, remember that the DIS DVC'ers really represent a TINY portion of the DVC membership.

One thing that everyone seems to agree on, however, is that current reservations will be honored. The rentee (you, in this case) is certainly innocent of all of this mess, and many here cannot see Disney ruining a family's vacation simply because that family happened to rent from someone who is unethically managing their ownership.

As for whether or not your particular renter is "commercial," that is impossible to tell. Maybe you are the only person she rents to each year. In that case, she is not a big-timer...she just can't or doesn't want to go each year. On the other hand, if she has dozens of regulars, like you, then yes she is in the DVC business....(and not legitimately).

All of this is my long-winded way of saying that in my opinion, you are safe right now. I cannot imagine your ressie being cancelled by Disney. However, for furture rentals, make sure you visit the DIS before renting, so that you can make sure you are up on whatever changes may have taken place.

Have a great trip!

Well if she is renting points and has many, many reservations and holds a lot of DVC contracts then you might have a very good reason to be worried. But in the interest of not coming across as Chicken Little I would think that if this renter were found to be a commercial renter they would probably be given a warning and a hold of some kind on their account. I don't think the reservations would be cancelled but then you never know. What they are doing is clearly against the policy and agreement they signed with DVC. I would probably start with an E-Mail to the person you are renting from and open the lines of discussion. Depending on what you hear I would then probably call at least once a week and see if they've been contacted by DVC yet.

Don't know the lady. Sounds like she is likely a commercial renter. If she owns a DVC resale company It would go hand in hand quite nicely. I truly think it unlikely that DVC is going to cancel ressies (yet), Too many tears would be flowing. Right now I think they're gauging the reaction and response to the "crackdown" announcement. I could be wrong though. :confused3

You think you're going to be visiting less often now that your child is school age :rotfl: Reconsider buying in, but if you can't, do your homework on the seller in the future. Good Luck. :)

Well if the message that DVC sent out earlier in the month holds any weight, cancellations of reservations would be the result if commercial renting were to be found. Again not to be chicken little, just providing you with the facts that we know about right now. Until someone comes here and tells us what happened to them there is no way to know for sure what is going to happen. I wish you the best.

Just a different note... looks like you have visited SC a lot. You should check out the Hilton Head Island DVC. Love SC, I think we're gonna move there some day. Seriously, reconsider about buying in. You know you're going to keep coming... it'll save you money long term and you won't have to worry about these kinds of things. ;)

LOOOVVEEE SC... I love the beach, and the neat places in SC. I have been tons of times, and still see something new everytime I go. Kinda like Disney. LOL.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. It just seems like the right thing to do would be to notify anyone deemed a commercial renter and tell them from "X" point forward any ressies they make would be under scrutiny. It would be unfair to just cancel someones stay without any notice and would give potential owners a bad taste in their mouths of this type of vacation ownership. How many thousands of people rented points before taking the plunge themselves?

I think someone realized that they shouldn't be posting that they are a RENTER (gasp, gasp) for "Big brother" to see. Someone probably pm'd her and tipped her off!!

:tiptoe:

Or...maybe she read another certain thread and got scared... ;)

Well.....Then, let's recap for those of you who may have missed the original post.......

The OP is renting points for a January stay from a lady who owns a DVC resale company. The lady is very nice & she has rented from her in the past. The OP never rents during busy times, but is very afraid that her ressie will be cancelled because of the anticipated crack down on commercial renters by DVC.

Did I leave anything out??

:thumbsup2

I think what probably happened is the OP contacted the owner she is renting from, and that owner asked/advised her to remove her post. Or, the OP was thinking, after reading some other threads, that she, as a renter may get flamed simply because she is renting.

I don't think the OP needs to worry about a cancellation at this time. IF DVC decides to start cancelling ressies, I would hope they will give the owner enough notice that they can let the renter know, and the renter will have time to make other arrangements for their trip. But I don't think cancellations will start anytime in the near future.

ITA!! Sometimes I don't have a lot of faith in DVC's handling of the system they created. But, one thing I do believe is that they can EASILY tell the difference between an owner not wanting points to go to waste, and a big-time renter. I don't think DVC would ever go after the owner just needing to get rid of some points....especially not by cancelling their ressie.

But, before she deleted it, I wanted to post, "WELL....DON'T POST THAT HERE!!! DON'T YOU KNOW DVC IS WATCHING YOU???!!!", just to give her a heart attack :lmao: but, then I decided that was too mean, even for me...so, I sat on my typing fingers instead. ;)

What is OP and ITA? I don' have these on my cheat sheets :confused3 Wasn't somebody doing an abbreviation update recently? I think I need to find that thread.

So, just out of curiosity...how many people started looking at public records after reading OP's post?

It's so funny because we were all so impressed with the 1,000 point club until all this new info. came to light over the last day or two. Now I feel like even more of a peon with my two measly contracts!

LOL!!! Now we need the 20K Club. I think they will have a room in their clubhouse called the Wechsler lounge. Oh and how about the Braunstein bar.... somebody stop me I could go on and on.......

OP here. I deleted my post because I talked with the lady I rent from. She said that yes DVC sent out the letter, but she is not a commercial renter. She only has one other person besides me that she rents to. She said that if she rented commercially it would hurt her business and reputation. She only rents enough to cover her dues.

So this made me feel better, and that is why I deleted the post. I did not want anyone else to worry ( like I did ) for no reason at all. :goodvibes I dont mind to admit that I rent points. Like I have said in the past, I really dont plan on taking dd out of school for trips. I also dont want to go in the summer. So, a DVC would not be a smart choice for us right now. We love OKW and love to stay there. :goodvibes
