Apparently, some people were mad that I posted this. There can be some very mean people on this bored and because I don't want to argue, I have deleted this post :sad2:

I don't know anything about it personally, just wanted to offer :grouphug: and would encourage you to speak with a practitioner knowledgeable with it. Good luck and happy wishes :wizard:

I suspect I might have some form of this, though not terribly severe. I really have no advice because I basically just deal with it as best I can. I do plan to have plastic surgery within the next few years and I'm hoping that will help.

I'm curious, though, (and you don't have to answer if it's too personal) but what exactly don't you like about your looks? Because I believe you've posted pictures of yourself and you are absolutely gorgeous!

Could you clarify are you one of those people who look in the mirror and see your self as weighing 200 lbs when you are really only 125? I am a little fuzzy on this disorder.

I had to look it up, Miranda Danda. As said above, I would ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist who deals with this. I have no experience or knowledge of it. As said above also, I sure do say you are pretty also, however, reading just a bit about the disorder, that really is not the crux of the disorder. It is great that you perceive that you may have something here that needs help of some sort, my very best for you.

This condition is closely related to the many eating disorders currently recognized by the psychiatric community.

The fact that you posted a picture of yourself on this forum, is an indication that you do not have a severe case of the condition. Those with truly severe cases try to hide under bulky clothes and cannot even stand to look at themselves, because their perception of their bodies is so distorted.

I recommend that you talk with a therapist specializing in eating disorders.

Be careful, too, in diagnosing yourself. You need a medical and/or psychiatric professional to make the right diagnosis.

There's something in the Psychology community called a "Self-fulfilling prophecy." It's incredibly strong and has been documented time and time before- the example with the teacher telling the students blue-eyed students are smarter and then the next week saying she made a mistake and it's the brown-eyed students.

Granted, if this was going on before you knew about this, the self-fulfilling prophecy doesn't really apply. But, you don't want to exacerbate anything that is going on by self-diagnosis now.

My suggestion is that when you go and see the doctor on Thursday, that you do not tell them about this diagnosis you have found (likely online). Let them make the decision as to the diagnosis or refer you to someone who can better assess the situation.

Good luck.

You probably shouldn't be asking for a psychological diagnosis from strangers on the Dis boards.

If you've already decided you have a problem with it, then see a professional.

:confused3

Compulsively checking your body for spots could be very likely OCD instead of BDD. I would make an appointment with your primary care doctor for a check up and also ask for a referral for a therapist.

Once those with BDD have surgery, their life is committed to it, so one surgery will not 'cure' you. Therapy and possibly meds is what well help you cope with this.

What you're describing is not BDD. Closer to OCD, as someone else suggested.

Bingo. You have OCD, not BDD.
