I don't think the posts are directed at renters but rather at members who rent out their points.

Bottom line is, you will not be treated any differently because you are renting points. There is no way to tell who are members and who are not, and even if there were I don't think anyone would care. Many people rent rooms through CRO so from your end it is no different than that. I think some members just feel like renting points shouldn't be allowed. They are not blaming the renters for this.

Go ahead, rent the points, and have a great trip! But beware...many a renter has become an owner after just one stay at a DVC resort!

the only place really where there might be the risk of a select few people "treating you second-class" is on the internet. try not to ever take things written on the internet too seriously. it's hard, i know.

anyway, you will have your dream vacation! trust me.
i rented 2 times before i finally got smart and did research on buying into DVC. (wish i had done it years ago!)
i am only just closing on my first contract, and am really excited to become a DVC Member.

when you are at WDW, it's probable that no one will even know that you are a renter. your keycards will most likely say "DVC Member" and you should get a nice "Welcome Home" at the front desk when you check-in.

While I have not ever rented points, I have stayed at a DVC resort on cash before we joined. Everyone was friendly and no one had any idea of who was a member or who wasn't - unless you were carrying around your DVC bag with you or struck up a conversation with someone.

As far as the onsite resorts go, with the exception of OKW, there is a deluxe hotel attached as well. Who knows who is staying in the hotel side vs. the villas side as you're roaming the resort? No one. I don't believe you would notice a difference in treatment at OKW either for being a non-member. It really isn't like a country club - no one will come up to you and ask if you are a member and then snub you or look down on you because you're not.

Just remember - even the sold out resorts have a certain percentage that is held back for cash reservations available through CRO. So even OKW is never going to be "members only".

Rent points for the time period you are wanting, go and have a fabulous time and hopefully you will love it enough that we will be giving you a big "Welcome Home" when you return!

We rented in February 2003 from a member on this board and had a wonderful experience. The renting process went very smoothly and I have absolutely no complaints.

Being a current DVC member, I saw no difference in how we were treated during our "rental" stay compared to staying on our own points. I am not aware of how anyone, CM's and guests, could tell the difference of a renter to an owner.

I have not read the entire post you refer to, but I have printed it off to peruse at a later time.

Actually, we stayed at the Boardwalk Inn in May 2002, and rented at the Villas in February 2003 (as mentioned above) and I can not pick out instance of different treatment.

So please don't worry and enjoy your trip!

Don't worry, be happy. There is no way for anyone (except maybe the front desk) to know if you are a renter or a member.

BTW, I'm sure the member you're renting from has informed you that when people stay on points (members, guests or renters) there is no daily housekeeping, and that extra towels are available for an additional fee and any other differences in services between a cash ressie through CRO and points?

You'll have a great time,you will feel very welcome. DVC'ers love to try and convience people that purchasing a DVC ownership is the greatest thing YOU could do with your money. Would a bunch of clique'ish,elitist, stuck up snobs do that. Heck no !!! We want everybody to pay dues.

I'd agree with this, and then it's not just renting points, but those who seem to do it constantly as a private business, tying up double reservation times for one rental period. I only say that to let you know that it's directed at a pretty specific group, not renters in general. Rent some points, try out DVC and have a great vacation.

addie - I rented BWV points last August and had a wonderful stay - we had stayed at BWI 2 years before and no one treated us any differently on the two stays (except to say "welcome home" when we entered the parking lot!). My son enjoyed meeting up with a few kids his age at the community center in the evenings and having kitchen facilities and the added room and privacy were huge bonuses for us - I believe we have been spoiled forever! I have just finalized renting points for next year so I can get my family together for my birthday - we know we'll have a wonderful time staying DVC again - I am hoping this trip will convince DH to buy DVC, now that we're starting to have grandkids- I would love to help my children take WDW vacations with their families. - IMHO, I don't think the post was directed at us and I wouldn't spend any time worrying about being treated differently than those renting from Disney! - - Enjoy!

Undies???? You mean........members are supposed to wear undies now? Is that in the purchase agreement somewhere? How did I not know this???? I better read the paperwork more carefully.

I'm not a DVC member yet, but I just want to say that it's one of human nature's more shamefull qualities that many people are always trying to differentiate themselves from others by class, income, ability, race, religion, whatever. As long as they can feel one-up on others, many are all for it, even though they may not think of it quite as openly as I've stated it. Anything sold as "members only" is seen as superior and desired. If you want a Disney example just look at the silly "concierge level" rooms in regular Disney resorts, where people pay ridiculously higher room rates for some "free" beer and cold cuts, but mostly so they can feel special and be on a level restricted to others.

I would remind anyone thinking that any non-member who actually pays Disney's price for these rooms ($289 and up!) probably isn't going to be a problem visitor and probably is used to staying in some pretty nice places and knows how to act. So I wouldn't understand any snobbery or hostility towards them.

As for those renting points, I wouldn't have any problem with you staying there at all.

Doesn't most every hotel bigger than a Holiday Inn do this? Must be popular for such a silly thing.

Nobody gets "DVC Member" tattooed on their foreheads. Nobody'll know you're not a member. Besides, nobody's really going to care. Enjoy the resort!


I'm rethinking the DVC thing though...I sure don't want to stay where nobody wears undies.

Just wanted to restate the warning posted above. We rented last year at OKW, and bought into DVC while we were down there. We had NO INTENTION of joining DVC before we left home, but loved the whole atmosphere so much, we couldn't resist. So brace yourself for a great time!

Addie, you'll have a great time, and go. I've rented before. It probably won't come up that you're not DVC, but if it does in conversation, like it did with us and a nice lady at BWV, they'll just try to convince you to join in a friendly way! You'll have a wonderful time, and you'll feel completely welcome. just don't be surprise if you've slapped down a down payment on DVC by the end of the week.

For the record, I quoted that "leeches" comment and it was from a thread from way way back-- it just stuck in my head for obvious reasons. The person who made the comment was roundly rebuked. I probably shouldn't have quoted it, but some comments in Rich's thread were getting my Irish up. This debate is really just an internet debate that a tiny fraction of the DVC comnunity spends time thinking about-- and they are mostly smart people who love to argue, so it comes up periodically (Even though I'm still a DVC wannabe, I visit this board often because the members are so smart, informed, and passionately opinionated. It's always good reading.)
