An article appeared in our local paper that a Commuter Air Service Feasibility Study was done that shows Dover, DE may be an excellent commuter flight market from the Civil Air Terminal at DAFB with direct flights to Orlando, FL.

I think it would definately tempt me to do a couple of long weekends to get my fix between my eight-day annual trip!

That's what I thought - there's nothing worse than having to get up and out the door at 3:30 am to catch a 7:00 am flight.

Direct flights?????? That would be pretty cool if the price was right.

I remember when Delta was flying out of the NewCastle Airport but it required a connecting flight in Atlanta. Plus the price was never better than Southwest's flights out of BWI/PHL.

Yes, the article stated that the downfall from the New Castle run was the layover in Atlanta. People didn't see it paying off timewise, because it was only a 30 minute ride to Philly to get a direct flight to Orlando, so that is why it tanked.

What paper did you read this in? Do you live in Dover? I live right off Rt. 1 in Middletown before the bridge, so that's a straight shot for me. The other thought is the potential parking savings from being able to get a ride there.

Dover is about as far for me as PHL but if it was a full size jet 737 or bigger and the same price I would go to Dover, wondering why the same situation would not hold true for ILG

It was in our local Dover Post.

And it would be a commuter service, so no 737/747's.

“Based on the current situation in Dover, there were two service models that appeared possible, turboprop service to a larger hub and leisure-orientated by a niche or vacation-type airline,” Wiedemann said.
So you're looking at twice weekly service on a charter type company like Allegiant or connecting service on a legacy airline on a turbo prob aircraft so I assume they mean US Airways via CLT or maybe Northwest/Delta.

Wiedemann said they discovered business passengers would be willing to pay $80 additional for local service and leisure passengers would accept $68 extra.
I'm curious, would you pay an extra $68 per person to fly out of Dover with a charter company like Allegiant?? or on an airline on a turbo-prob via a hub??

I wish they would add service from Sussex County airport to Washington Dulles. It would allow DE residents to catch onward flights elsewhere (including international) and also provide DC residents a way to skip the summer beach traffic.
