This should be interesting!

Just as fans were leaving Hall H after the Tron: Legacy presentation, Disney revealed a few surprises for those still present. The first was a greeting from Johnny Depp in character as Capt. Jack Sparrow (more on this in another story), the second was a teaser of a brand new film based on Disneyland's Haunted Mansion attraction, directed by Guillermo del Toro. And now we know why he backed out of The Hobbit.

Del Toro talked about his love for the ride, which he has been visiting regularly since it first opened in 1969. "This, for me, is one of the few Holy Grails in life, because to me the Haunted Mansion is the most precious real estate on Earth," del Toro told the audience."

Referring to the previous Haunted Mansion film released in 2003, del Toro said, "We are not returning Eddie Murphy's calls. We are not making it a comedy."

The film will be in live action, and (what did you expect?) 3D. Del Toro promised an E-ticket ride that will be "true to the spirit and art and aesthetic of the original imaginers that created the Mansion." He said it will be scary and fun at the same time, "but the scary will be scary."

The story will revolve around the character of the Hatbox Ghost, as seen in the attic portion of the ride. A new mythology centered on the mansion as the most haunted place in the world, will revolve around this pivotal character.

Del Toro ended his brief appearance commenting, "This is a dream come true, and I hope to steal as many props as possible."

I love the Haunted Mansion ride and Movie(with Eddie Murphay& Nathaniel Parker)

This is the best news! I am a huge fan of Del Torro and the Haunted Mansion is my favorite Disney ride. Finally a REAL Haunted Mansion movie!!!:cool1:

Yep, I've been watching the Comic-Con news, and this is HUGE. I'm still more excited about TRON for personal reasons, but I love del Toro's stuff.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies, and possibly the greatest fantasy flick ever (IMHO)! And del Toro has an excellent track record with adapting other work into flicks. Look at what he was able to do with Hellboy and Blade II.

I think he really understands what will transition from the Haunted Mansion properly to film, and the guy has a crazy eye for detail. This film should be a great mix of the Hellboy blockuster factor with the personal feel of Pan's or Devil's Backbone ... perfect pairing of director and project

EDIT:
After hearing about the project, I've read from a few more sources at the Comic-Con panel that Del Toro said he's NOT locked down as the director, and may only write/produce the movie? While I'll still be happy with him as producer, it'll be a dissapointment if he doesn't direct.

I am so glad to hear this. The Haunted Mansion movie with Eddie Murphy was the worst Disney film ever!! The only good part of the film was Terrance Stamp as Ramsley. The other actors were awful, in the scene where the mom is dying, the kids are looking right at the camera! I never really care for remakes but am so happy to hear about this one!
