Defunct Discount Department Stores

Worked at Hills while going to college. I left after three years to work at Handy Andys for better pay...3.40 a hour!

I've never seen a Walmart Express nor a Neighborhood Market.

I never saw a Neighborhood Market until we moved to the Menphis TN area. We have one about 5 minutes away. Imagine Walmart with only the food and tiny pharmacy/personal hygiene area. Don't know what the Express version is.

What state are you in? I remember a Jamesway in up-state NY near my aunt, but didn't realize it was a chain. It's now a super Walmart.

Sorry for the delay in responding - I lost track of this thread.

Yes, New York. Whether it's upstate or downstate depends on who in the state you're asking. ;) It was the Hudson Valley area, just north of Westchester.

Some that I remember that haven't been listed (or I missed seeing) are: Macks Department Store (later Maxway), Sky City, and King's Department Store.

There is still one Goodys that I know of. It is in Bremen which is 30 or 40 miles west of Atlanta.

We still have a Goody's in our home town. I have heard rumors that it is closing though.

I'm on Long Island, so it's "up-state" for me :) There used to be a Jamesway near Cobleskill. I kind of miss it.

I'm in Jackson, TN today for work and pulled up to a stop light. Looked over and it was a large (closed of course) Service Merchandise building. Immediately thought of this thread.

Not the best picture, but I tried ;)image.jpeg

We had Woolworths. I remember going in with my mom. They had a lunch counter that was always really busy.
There is a store in Bakerfield,CA, it still has the name of Woolworths. And it has the lunch counter to boot and serves hamburgers and such and oh so good!

We had TG&Y and Winn's. Probably both considered 5 and dime stores, but I remember them being so much better than say, Dollar General. Of course I was a kid and as long as they had a decent toy selection and sold Icees, I was easily impressed.
I forgot all about TG&Y.
