Define Ignorance

My 13 yr old just asked me to define ignorance. After thinking a minute, I told him that I would define it as not listening to what is being said.

He told me that he would define it as racism, because he thinks racism is ignorant.

How would you define ignorance?

I would say uneducated and that is such a broad answer, but everything that comes to mind here is broad.

You're son is right though, and there are alot of other issues that can also be considered ignorance. I thought of homosexuality since he said racism. Discrimination of any kind is ignorance.

I would define it as someone who can't understand basic concepts and situations in life.

I agree with this but think it's not only the lack of knowledge or understanding, but the outright refusal to learn or become knowledgeable regarding a subject.

I would say that its a refusal to acknowledge that there is more information on any given subject. Just making up your mind based on what you want to believe, and not accepting the truth or facts.

I can't really agree with that. I have an ignorance, as you will, to some things, but it isn't because of a lack for trying to learn it, there are some things I just don't get, no matter how much I try. But I do also have to agree as well.

I used to give classes and one slide I often used at the start:

Three Definitions:

Ignorance - A lack of knowledge (this is curable)

Stupidity - Ignorance coupled with an unwillingness to learn (Many people consider this a capital crime)

Stupid Question - A question which you do not ask as you are afraid it will show ignorance.

And many of these classes included Federal Judges and Clerks of Court.
