I didn't hear much about this movie when it was in the theatres but its been rainy this week so I picked it up from Blockbuster. The movie stars Daniel Craig, (007) and Liev Schrieber. They are the real life Bielski Brothers who escaped the Nazi slaughter of their town by escaping into the Belarussian woods. Zuk fought in the resistance, Tuvia was the WWII Moses who lead, protected, and maintained a self contained society of about 1200 Jewish refugees for three years. Its an amazing story of not only resistance but survival. Jews were being turned in by their mercenary neighbors for 500 rubles a piece. Those that sheltered Jews were tortured and killed. They were being sent to the "labor camps" which were in actuality death camps. When Zuk was asked, and pondered the question;" What are Jews good for, they don't fight", his answer chilled me; "Jews are good for dying". Their forest camp was one of the few bright spots of the Nazi campaign. How they survived and remained hidden almost seems like Divine intervention. Good movie, some necessary violence and an inspirational ending.
