Defense of renters + DVC vs. resale question

Hello!
I've been reading some other threads regarding those who rent DVC points and, for the most part, it sounds as though the renters are somehow "getting away" with something not quite right. My DH and I have been considering becoming DVC members for about 2 years now. For us, with DH working for a non-profit organization and myself being a homeschooling mother with no income, it would be a huge investment for us. Last January, we rented points---yes, it was cheaper than staying at WL--but we also really wanted to experience staying in a DVC property and see if it would be worth the sacrifice. (BTW, we absolutely loved our stay at VWL...now just have to make our budget work.) I think renting points gives people who are currently non-DVC members a necessary opportunity to know if it's for them or not and, in the majority of cases, probably encourages more interest in the market. But, that's just my 2 cents...
Also, is the main reason to buy directly through Disney vs. resale that there are no closing costs with Disney? Seems like the closing costs would be much less than the price difference, but I may be missing something!!!
Thanks!

I can only speak for myself... I rented out points last month and found 3 wonderful renters. But, I also went through probably 15 others who weren't so wonderful. I guess the hardest part is renters don't understand how DVC works for us and our points and use year. (On a side note, they shouldn't have to know either) Some tend to get tiffy about what we require for them to rent from us.

I wish I would have know about renting points the last 4 times we've gone to WDW! I think it is smart and nothing wrong with it. I'm also glad that my renters and myself were able to help each other out. Me by helping them enjoy a wonderful vacation. For them, helping me out pay some unexpected bills by paying me for my points.

To answer your question, we went through that last year also. When we went, we had every intention to buy resale. Once we sat in the DVC office we weighed closing cost and the 12 additional years with SSR and went with Disney.

We homeschool also, so understand your budgeting! It is definately hard living on one income!

ptrbryant,

I agree with you totally. We stayed last fall @ BCV on rented points. DH would've NEVER considered purchasing, but while there stopped & talked to the guy @ the DVC desk @ BC lobby, we took the tour while there also. We didn't purchase then, big decision & we needed to take a good close look at our finances, etc. This past July we purchased 180 points @ SSR. We are looking forward to 50 years of DVC & WDW.

Feel no guilt. Renting is a contractual right. The current argument that renting somehow makes DVC more expensive for us is no different than arguing that actually using the paper and laundry supplies provided in the room makes DVC more expensive. Both are simply part of the package that we all bought into. Removing them would reduce the price of DVC but also reduce its value. So enjoy and be happy.

No one situation covers those that rent. As for myself, I occasionally rent and my views are well stated on this BBS for all to see. As I've said before, I've met many friends through renting. All in all, it's been a positive experience. There have been a couple of bumps in the road but nothing serious. I've had several that rented who ended up buying. I also rent out my Marriott weeks on HH occasionally. There's nothing more gratifying than hearing from someone you rented to how great a time they had. As one person put it, "thanks for allowing us to use your home". I'm always afraid something will happen that is beyond my control or an honest mistake on my part so I work extra hard to try to minimize the chance that doesn't happen.

until this year I hadn't rented once - but my brother needed money so I am renting, too.

and no I don't believe that renting DVC points is hurting DVC - most of my renters were going to stay off-site. and yes I tell them all the chargers upfront - DVC is expensive both to own and rent - but in my case it is well worth it!!!

I have enjoyed all the discussion with my renters - some are really fun people and very excited to finally be staying at WDW not just visiting...

However WDW is finally catching on to DVC point renters and are putting refrigerators in WDW resort rooms - shortly I think they will also put in a mircowave - but that still can't complete with a 1-bedroom - studios yes - one-bedroom and up no way!!!

Since I try to only rent studios - it could hurt - don't know the refrigerators in the WDW resorts aren't being advertise in my area.

some of the tug members didn't know about DVC points for rent - I think it changed some of their minds about DVC.

since some of you are new - what has happened this late year - their are more new members than ever - what changed that make you decide to buy DVC???
