We just spent 8 nights in a lock off in late January.
DH, DD, DS, & I took the 1BR side, & my parents took the studio portion. The studio door access to the hallway was great for my father. He could get up early, go straight outside for a walk, to get coffee, or whatever.
Having their own refrigerator was also a big plus.
I think it depends on the ages of your kids. I have little kids (2 & 5), and my worry the one time we were in a lock-off was there's more than one door for them to get out of the room from, and if all the adults are in one room, and a young child goes in the other room and closes the connecting door, then the only way to get to them is to go out into the hallway and into the other door with a key. We brought gaff tape with, and taped the doors in such a way that they wouldn't latch shut. It worked, but still a bit of a pain. Until my kids get older, I'd much prefer a dedicated.
So if I was taking my brother and his wife and their two kids would it be better to request a lock-off? The second bedroom in a lock-off has only 1 bed and a pull out sofa right? Would that 2nd room be smaller in a lock-off? Also, does the key card work for both the main door and the door to the studio portion? Thank you so much for your replies.
I just called for reservations June 14-19 and was given a lock-off. My DD is 15 and I thought this would be perfect for her to have her own "suite" to hang in when we have down time from the heat. She tends to stay up later than us which isn't a problem but we get up much earlier so on non park days she isn't happy with us making coffee and waking her up. I would think that with small children it wouldn't be ideal but could work if you latched the door with the bar (hopefully they can't reach).
I know at VWL, the second bedroom has two queens, but that's not necessarily the case at all of the other DVC resorts. I forget which DVC resorts have some of their dedicated 2-br's with a pullout in the second bedroom.
