Dedicated to Vomit phobes on the DIS!

Just be glad you weren't with my family when we were leaving DHS for the day and heading to the airport in Nov. - some young teenaged kid with his family vomited all over the parking lot Tram a few cars ahead of us and it honestly ruined the day for me. I was so distressed that the family just left it there and the tram kept rolling picking up/dropping off guests....:scared1:

Older movie, but Apollo 13 - I think it's Kevin Bacon that yaks in the space shuttle & it floats because there's no air pressure....lovely...

DEFINITELY Celebrity Rehab - and it's the real deal when they're detoxing, and they just love to show it.

Yes Emetophobia is a very real, and believe it or not, a very common phobia. I've read that they do situation therapy for this - making a patient watch videos of vomiting repeatedly - as a cure. No thanks! There are many different kinds of Emet - some fear seeing others vomiting, some fear vomiting themselves.

I've got 2 sons that catch EVERY stomach bug going around. One gets migraines that cause him to vomit. The other one gets motion sick, car sick & has reflux which causes vomiting in his sleep. He's also part of a trial study on episodic vomiting. So there is A LOT of puke in my house. I don't even mind the actual act of them doing it, or cleaning it up, it's the anticipation of who/what/where/when that makes me nuts. I go to bed every night wondering which one will be sick during the night. I send them to sleepovers with so much anxiety that they will vomit at someone else's house (it's happened), that I am up all night waiting for the phone to ring. I hate going on vacations where they're on a plane/bus/vehicle for long periods of time because of the motion sickness. So I've got my own emetophobia/anxiety thing going on that surely isn't the norm!

Ok back to our regularly scheduled topic....movies with vomit.....

I've always had a really bad gag reflex; tastes, textures, and even smells can make me gag. I also feel nauseous when I'm nervous (or during my time of the month ). The strange thing is, seeing vomit on TV or in a movie doesn't make me sick, but seeing it in real life makes my stomach turn.

MTV's Silent Library...Although there are a zillion reasons not to watch it! There's a group of people, and each round, one person gets chosen to do some ridiculous and/or horrible stunt. The friends must all remain silent or the team doesn't get any money for that round. At least once a show, someone has to attempt to eat something completely nasty.
How about the old Fear Factor? I vividly remember a woman biting into a sheep's eyeball...You know the sound of biting into a cherry tomato? Ever had a bit squirt out of your mouth? Yeah. Sorry if I ruined cherry tomatoes for you.

While reading this thread I just saw a video game commercial and a stupid robot just threw up! Come on!!!!

My DH loves to watch House and always wants me to watch it with him but every freaking time during the opening someone pukes or coughs up blood! Needless to say I don't watch any more!

I went and saw Black Swan with my friend, umm yeah I didn't read the previews and had no idea what I was getting myself into. Yeah there was puking and some toe/finger nail issues which make me oh so horrible sick! :scared1:

Thanks for the heads up about the Black Swan! I wanted to go see this movie....guess I can't now :(

oh my, a thread just for me! I'm a vomit phobe, can't see it, hear someone doing it or smell it *gag* without feeling sick to my stomach myself. The worst vomit scene in a movie has to be the pie eating contest scene from Stand by Me, ugh, just thinking of all those people throwing up on eachother sends me over the edge.

:rotfl: I just posted about "Stand By Me". Worst. Vomit. Scene. Ever. Thankfully, I didn't see this in the theater, but I did rent it for a slumber party I had in May 1987. So, so gross. There wasn't much demand for the Ruffles and onion dip after that scene.

I have to laugh at myself because I love zombie movies and I can watch someone take an axe to a zombie's head, but the sight of vomit skeeves me so much. Even now thinking about it I feel like cringing.

How could they just walk away like that????:headache: I would be mortified that my kid did that and I would tell someone and attempt to clean it up. We were leaving the mall one night and on our way out there was a pile of barf in the hallway. Why would someone not tell someone so it could be cleaned up?:confused3 NASTY!!!!!! If there was a way to remove the vomiting center of the brain I would be first in line:worship:

Either one of 2 things.....I would have to give your kids up for adoption or I would be cured from exposure:eek:. Exactly why I dont allow sleepover's at my house....if someone vomited I would DIE! Thank God my hubby can deal with it.

Thanks for the warning....about where in the movie is this scene so if I see the movie I will be expecting it??

I've seriously considered both scenarios.....;)

My DH cannot tolerate vomit of any kind even from his own kids so I've got to deal with it alone. Even if I call him during the night to go get paper towlels or a garbage bag or something he throws the items to me from down the hall.

So I'm not the only one who dreads sleepovers for that very reason?!?!?!?

For those of you with kids, has this gotten better since having them? I was really bad, but it was a trial by fire for me. DS is a total barfer, so I've gotten used to it. I mentally will myself not to throw up. I am ok with my own kids, but forget others' kids!!!

Hillbeans- We had a similar incident while waiting for buses at WDW. A mom andher teenage boy walked through the bus lane, he paused, and then vomited right on the ground in front of everyone. Then they kept walking to their car!!! C'mon, tell a CM and get it cleaned up! DS, who is a total barfer, got really wide-eyed. I whipped him around and distracted him!

I think I know why film makers do it, though... for the same reason I've gotten terrible glee from writing vomit scenes in a couple of my stories. It's hilarious, disgusting and actually kind of useful from a character/story-telling point of view.

The vomiting character is utterly helpless, even if he's otherwise a big strong guy. He can't get any lower, or more vulnerable. Vomiting is just about rock bottom (and frankly, I don't want to write anything more rock-bottom than that!). If you can take a character from being completely fine, to face down in a puddle of his own puke, and back up on his feet again... hey, it's a complete story arc! :lmao:

Not to mention, I bet the special effects guys just love setting up those scenes. Messy, awful fun. And you just KNOW it's going to make all your viewers squeal and recoil. So it makes an impact, for better or worse. It's like with kids - attention is always good, even if it's negative attention.

I have not gotten better I've gotten worse! I have become a germ phobe now and am constantly making my kids wash their hands. I hardly ever let them have friends over in the winter when the stomach bug is out full force. I live in fear all season long. I won't eat out, won't bring them to many indoor public places and HATE winter birthday parties. Lucky for me my kids are not big pukers, guess someone was looking out for me on that one:thumbsup2 I have been phobic most of my life. I cannot see, hear, or know about someone puking nor can I do it myself. It has been 25 yrs since I last vomited. Please dont let this jinx me:goodvibes My DS9 is also phobic now :guilty: Although I have never let them know I am afraid I think they got the hint when they threw up and I ran away!

You sounds just like me. Maybe we should start an Emet Support Thread - I'm game if anyone else is! There's the Coping Compassion Board on here where people have threads for support & things like that - medical, mental, phobic, etc.

I'm not so much phobic about seeing the vomit or cleaning it up (although serisouly, no one enjoys that), it's the anxiety I get from the constant worry that one of them will throw up - especialy during the night (because that's when they always seem to do it - especially DS13 with reflux) - or when they're somewhere else without me. I'm also not afriad at all of myself vomiting, although I'm not a puker like my kids are. We've lived in our current house for 5 years & I've never been sick while living here. My kids vomit almost monthly, if not more.

DS13 is at a wrestling tournament all day & now I just KNOW he will catch the stomach bug from that hot, sweaty, germ-filled wrestling room. DS10 has a friend over & while I'm sure he's totally healthy, my phobic OCD brain will Lysol everything they touched while he was here. I have a lot of strange habits related to this phobia that would make you call the looney bin on me, and I know it's unreasonable to everyone else, but tell that to my phobic/OCD brain.
