Decreasing party size on ADR?

I am in a little bit of a quandry: I booked all of our ADRs at 90+ days, when my SIL and 2 children were planning on coming on the trip. She has since decided that they can't go at that time, and I have tried changing my ADRs accordingly. There are 2 that I cannot get in a smaller party size. Now, I have only been looking online and have NOT called, because I'm afraid if I say the other 3 will not be with us, they will cancel the ADRs all together! So I am wondering, if I call and ask for a smaller party size will they be able to just change my ADR or will it get canceled? On the other hand, can I just check in for the ADR and tell them at that time that we have a smaller party,or is that frowned upon? The way I see it, if I could downsize the ADRs it would open up availability for 3 other people so I would rather do it that way, but I don't want to risk losing the ressies.. Anyone have experience here?

I was able to downsize 2 of my reservations with no problem at all. The dining representative didn't cancel any existing reservations, just modified the number for me.

I have experience -- we have had a trip where someone backed out and I just showed up without.

Additionally my daughter now lives and works there and we can't tell three months ahead which meals she will be able to be with us for so I make the reservations assuming she will and if she isn't we show up without her. I have never had any problems at all.

Thanks for the replies.:) Traveliz, I'm glad to know it wasn't a problem for you showing up with one less, but guess I would feel guilty showing up with 3 less people for our ADR. In this case it means a different size table, from 7 to 4. And tamis thanks for reporting your experience. I would like to hear from anyone else who has tried downsizing. Anyone?

No don't worry about it - it just means that if they place you at a smaller table then there will be another table opening for a walk up. The restaurants are much better at dealing with the whole numbers situation than the computer program that the call agents have.

We have had situation very similar to this. Don't sweat changing ressies.

I just did this a few weeks ago. My SIL and nephew had to back out of our trip. When I called to cancel an ADR that was just for the 2 of them, (a place I know my kids wouldn't like the menu) I asked about our other ressies that were for all 6 of us. The CM told me I should definitely drop the other 2 in our party for each ADR so that others may get it.
I had around 6 ADRs that she went thru to delete them from each ressie and didn't mind doing it at all.

Thanks everyone! I will call today and "downsize". I'll let you know how it goes!
