The pics on this thread remind me of an episode of Golden Girls.


The big thing in now is granite countertop and I have this crazy vision that 20 years from now, it will look extremely dated.

I think it might -but what choice to we have? What kind of countertop would not look dated?

I think that in decorating you just have to go with it and accept that in 20 years we will be making fun of it on the dis.

I think granite and stainless with both look dated in 20 years!

My house is very dated with its wallpaper, but I am not ready to part with it because I still like it. I know my DDIL goes crazy everytime she comes over and keeps offering to help me redecorate, but I LOVE my Debbie Mumm wallpaper and I'm not planning on moving anytime soon.


I was so glad to see the whole geese thing go by the wayside. How many dressed geese did we really need to see??? I will admit I do still have geese boarder up in my kitchen...... I did say I still like my wallpaper!!!!

I really don't see how natural stone (granite) could go out of style..... but I guess "Urban Renewal" proved even beautiful antique buildings can go out of style. Urban Renewal was the work of the Devil btw.

OT again (SORRY)! but reading a great book, might want to check it out. It's called Talking to Girls about Duran Duran by Rob Sheffield.

I've seen that mentioned on their official web site. Haven't had a chance to look for it yet.

Yes, and also hate the white/wood cabinets along with anything hunter green and mauve.

I was thinking about the colors from the 80's and the only one I could remember was grey. It was part of the "modern" look back then. I was ok with the pastel colors (still am) back then.

Some of the decor choices back then I wasn't a fan of, but there were a lot of other things during that decade that I loved as a teen in the 80's (fashion and hair styles being two of them).

Stenciling - geese, pineapples, country hearts. I have sunflower border in my kitchen. I probably would have loved it 15 years ago, but not it's got to go. Unfortunately a kitchen remodel is not in the immediate future. I have shiny brass coated fixtures in my bath and can't wait to replace those too, including the three round bulb light fixture.

How did I forget stenciling? I remember stenciling pink hearts and a checkerboard pattern on the walls.

Or Geese! My sister got married in the midst of the Goose crazies. She was petrified of receiving a gaggle of them!

i have to admit to missing the kitchen chairs with the rollers. Those were convenient. I switched out my chair for a desk chair with wheels when we are in school.

When I first got married on 89, the big thing was mauve, country blue and geese everywhere. And everything said country on it. Like we didn't catch on after seeing all the geese dressed in gingham bonnets. Nope. I don't miss that trend.

Black lacquer furniture.

Lucite. My uncle dated a woman whose entire home was mauve everything, rounded arch doorways to everyroom (like the Simpsons house) and a curve stairway to the second floor with a Lucite banister.

My dining room was black lacquer at that time, and I loved that, too.

I don't know. It seems granite has gone overdrive in popularity that there will eventually be a trend to get away from that.

They sure do like their shiny black furniture.

What about that lamp that fanned out like a bunch of headlights.

And I recall my mom using lots of faux foliage dyed blue and ostrich feathers.

I also think that a natural stone like granite will have a lot of staying power, and stainless is the standard for commercial kitchens so it probably won't ever totally go away. But, hey, anything's possible!

The teal-peachy dining room is horrifyingly funny! The first couch I bought is nearly the same as those chairs, it's on it's last legs right now firmly covered in a chocolate brown suede microfiber cover and in a second string place in a room used by mostly kids now! Since they're past toddler age i have feeling even slipcovered it will be gone soon. LOL

No kidding most people don't realize that it's been in use in high end homes since the 50's. I hate mauve but teh rest of the 80's trends don't bother me.
