Decorated NYPD Search-And-Rescue Dog Dies
Zeus Dies Of Cancer
Posted: 9:39 a.m. EDT July 25, 2002

NEW YORK -- He sniffed his way through crime scenes, helped rescuers during hurricanes and assisted with recovery work at the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Now, the police department's most decorated search-and-rescue dog is being mourned as a canine hero.

Zeus, a 10-year-old German shepherd, died of cancer Tuesday at the home of his handler, Officer Robert Schnelle.

"He could catch bad guys one night, then be looking for people trapped in a building collapse the next morning, then be at a school getting pet by schoolchildren that afternoon," Schnelle said. "He could do everything, that dog. Zeus was one in a million."

Zeus also searched the rubble of the Oklahoma City bombing.

He retired from duty two years ago and went to live with Schnelle and his family on Long Island.

The department's canine unit now includes five other dogs -- Apollo, Hanson, Storm, Bravo and Atlas.

What a wonderful dog Zeus was, I know his "handler" will miss him very much.
