Has anyone declared over $10.000 when visiting USA is it straight foward what is the outcome - need to take over this amount 10 people 4 week holiday cheers
Unless you all have the same surname and are all immediate family, I'd split it up between the adults and then use seperate customs forms so you won't have over $10,000. That's what we did when we got married in 2005. If you do all share the same surname , well then, I'd be inclined say nothing!
Not sure if it's wise to take that amount in cash or TCs - also, you would probably get a better exchange rate using a non-commission credit or debit card like Nationwide.
If you do not declare it and you get caught, your money will be sized, as it counts as smuggling!!!!!
You would be better off getting a CC that does not charge for overseas use ie. nationwide, at lot safer than carrying such a large amount of money.
Yes agree take the money in other forms ie credit/debit card. It is very risky taking that amount of cash, although TC's may not be such a problem. Also as has been said I am sure that the actual amount is per family/unit not the whole group.
I felt bad enough losing my wallet with £500 in last year, $10,000+ is way too much to be carring around, use a fee free credit card, safer and better rate hopefully when you travel.
The blue/white form says you have to declare if you are taking in or out of the US more than $10,000 including cash/travellers chqs. If you don't report the total amount it can lead to seizure of all the currency and also criminal prosecution.

Q13 on the form. I am (we are) carrying currency or monetary instruments over $10,000 or foreign equivalent.
So yes it is per family name.
Assuming the 10 are not all the same family, then spread it around.
Monetary Instruments are currency, travelers (sic) check, personal or cashier check. ( and unlikely but also stocks and bonds)
If it is unavoidable you have to fill in customs form 4790 (it might have been replaced by FinCEN Form 105) at customs, but it's pretty simple.
