How far down into the actually belly of the ship do decks go?And is deck 1 the TOP deck or the bottom? DH is worried if we book a cat 8 or 9 we'll end up somewhere below the waterline and if the boat sinks,we're done for! I have every confidence that the boat will NOT sink but it's hard to reassure DH when I can't even tell (from the diagrams I've seen anyway)how far down into the ship the decks go.

Deck 1 is the lowest. And it's a good deal above the waterline.

The only occupancy below the waterline are crew quarters.

Ok...that's good.I wasn't sure and DH was really freaking about that.

Many people assume that Deck 1 is below the water line...I have heard people have fears about this. We have stayed on Decks 1 and 2 and I can assure you they are well above the water line!!! There are crew quarters below the water line and I think there are 2 or 3 more decks under Deck 1 (not for passenger use).

One cool thing about staying on Deck 1 is when the sea is a bit rough, the waves do come up by the porthole...it is awesome to see mother nature at work!!!

And if you are in a following sea, there is less motion the closer you are to the keel of the ship.

GenieDana,
Sorry to be a sea-dummy, but when you say keel, what is that? Are you saying that the lower decks(closer to the waterline) feel less of the motion? If so, that will be good because we have a cat9 midship on deck 2:D Let me know, please.

The lower deck that you are on, the less motion you will feel. We were in Palo's for either tea or brunch when the ship turned. You could really feel it and see it from way up there. One minute you could see the horizon, then just the blue sky, the horizon again and then just the dark blue sea. What fun!

Thanks sdoane,
This makes me feel alot better because I thought it would be worse down there. I wonder why they charge more the higher you go? It isn't as though the ocean view rooms with the porthole are any larger than ours on 2nd floor. I have never understood this.
Thanks again

sdoane!
Girl, when I read your posting, I had deja vu and could remember that feeling! Glad I had sea bands on! I love the ship, I love Disney, but I have to be soooo careful with the visual stuff - walking from aft to forward and seeing that horizon go up and down and up and down....well, you know what I'm saying!!!!!

Your daughter is lovely!!!!!!

We take Deck 5 faithfully and love it! Yes, it moves but hey, that's part of being on the ocean!

Sea bands rule!

Can kids wear those sea bands? My grandson will be 8, and I was wondering if we should bring one for him.
Thanks

To put it in very simplistic terms...the keel is the bottom of the ship. Really, it is one of the principal structural members of a ship, running lengthwise along the center line from bow to stern. Aircraft also have keels that are similar in funtion to a ship's keel.

Cruise ships, hotels, apartments (the list goes on) charge more as you go up primarily because they can and people will pay for it, but it does usually entail some perks or whatever. A lot of it has to do with society's sense of status whereas the higher you are, the better off you are. But otherwise, you are paying more for a larger porthole, a verandah, better view off the ship, more amenities (for the suites), etc. You may not be getting any actual tangible benefits, but the intangibles are sometimes worth it, and that's why people will pay extra for it.

alex.....very nicely put....I was trying to think of something to say about the cost the higher you go, but you said it perfectly!!!!

Thanks for explaining this to me. You are right, it makes some people feel better to be on a higher deck even if there is no added visual benefits to the higher room. Many people like being closer to the action I guess. I will just keep my little buns on 2 and love it.:) Just being on this ship for the first time is enough for me.
Happy cruising to all!
