Decision made on MY Stroller Situation

I know many on these boards wrestle with the stroller decision for Disney and elsewhere. I wanted to post my experiences for those Moms in a similar situation as mine.

My girls are 4 and 6.5 yo. DD6 never uses a stroller except at WDW. DD4 is a wimp and will get tired walking from the car to the entrance of the mall, :rolleyes1 so if there is any walking involved, she needs a stroller. When DD6 sees her sister get pushed around like a queen, she wants to sit also.

Up until our last trip to WDW in April 2005, we used a cheapie umbrella stroller for both girls for many trip. One umbrella stroller bit the dust, so in April, we brought the umbrella for DD6 and our old (1999) Combi Ultra Savvy for DD4 that had a canopy.

Problem was that DD6 is now 54 lbs and DD4 is 35 lbs! There was no way for me to push DD6 easily in that cheapie umbrella (I'm a wimp too), so DH got to do that and I pushed DD4 in the Combi. The cheapie umbrella held up but was was very hard to push. Even DH was starting to complain and said that was the last time she got to sit in a stroller.

DH did not want to buy another stroller because we had 4 before (Combi, 2 U, and a large Graco? that also bit the dust) and our girls should be done with them soon and we aren't planning on any more kids.

On our next trip, DH will be flying home almost a week before me and the 2 girls, so I have to handle both girls on my own at the parks and at the airport. I know that DD6 would like to sit sometimes but there was no way I could push her in what we had now. She can walk on short park days and if we had no choice but there is a lot of walking at WDW and it's nice to have the girls in the stroller so that I could keep track of them especially if I'm alone.

I thought about having DH pushing her in the cheap U when necessary the first week and I would rent a double at the parks when he was gone. But since we were staying at the BWV, it was more about the walk from the resort to the parks that I was concerned about. Also $16-18 times 4 days was about $64-72 and I still wouldn't have a stroller outside the parks or at the airport.

I talked to DD6 in depth about our Disney trip before I purchased the air tickets. I told her that when Daddy left, there was no way I could push both girls in the stroller at the same time. She knows that she is too heavy for me. She has to be willing to walk otherwise we would just leave with Daddy. I told her that I would explore all options such as renting or buying a new stroller but if nothing was feasible for our situation, she would have to walk. She made sure that I was only talking about walking the 2nd part of the trip and that Daddy would push her the first week if she got tired, and promised she would walk if it meant that we could stay longer.

I started doing research on-line, here and elsewhere, and figured out that the Maclarens were the ony stroller that could handle DD6's heavy weight. I had pushed DD6 in a borrowed Maclaren once and knew that it made her higher weight very easy to push. Started toying with the idea of a Maclaren double ($$$) because it could handle both my girls' weight and it was still considered an umbrella stroller and I could push and keep track of them at the same time.

Did I mention that I was wimpy? I only handle light umbrella strollers. Our Combi is only 8 lbs. The babysitter use to take the Graco? out to take my then DD4 to preschool. DD2 would sit in the stroller and DD4 would "sit" in the basket! :earseek: They got some serious use out of it before it went missing when they went to visit a friend's place after school. The babysitter left it downstairs in the friend's apartment building and it was gone when they came down - probably got thrown away as garbage because it was pretty beat up!

I knew that I would have to handle both the kids and a 27 lbs umbrella stroller by myself when DH went home. Wasn't sure my "muscles" were up to it. Theoretically, a Maclaren double was the best choice for my situation but I had to confirm it by trying it out in real life.

DH and I packed the kids in the car this past Saturday and off we went to Babiesrus and BuyBuyBaby to try out strollers. Boy, it was a long time since we needed to step into either of those stores!

I told the girls we were ONLY trying out the strollers to see if Mommy like them, we were not buying anything now and if I didn't like the strollers we might not get anything at all.

Babiesrus didn't have a large selection but BuyBuyBaby did. As I secretly suspected, although I liked the Maclaren double (tried the rally and the twin traveller) it still seemed a bit bulky to me and heavy even when folded. Hats off to all the Moms out there who handle multiple kids and heavy duty strollers seemingly with one hand tied behind their backs! :cheer2:

I thought that I might feel a little overwhelmed with handling a 27 lbs folded umbrella and 2 little kids and whatever baggage we may have on my own. I'm tired just thinking about it. It was beginning to look like DD6 was going to have to walk the second half of our trip unless I shelled out $$ for a double stroller that was only good at the park.

The double was out. We started to look at the single Maclarens because DH would still need to push DD6 during the first week and the cheap umbrella was being retired. We tired the Volo, Truimph, and Quest and they all pushed effortlessly, like a dream even with 54 lbs in it!

DH and I preferred the Volo because it was the simpliest. DH actually liked the mesh seats over the fabric seats - lol! Easier to clean. The 2 higher end models were nice too but I couldn't figure out the recline feature and thought the seats had too many "buttons" to deal with.

Remember that we had lived with multiple trips to Disney with cheap umbrella strollers without even a canopy (which I always wanted). We didn't really need any fancy features such as the recline (although nice) because we usually only spent a few hours a day at the parks and would head back to the resort when tired. For us the strollers were not traveling comfy beds for the kids to rest but a place to plant their butts if they were too tired or more likely lazy to walk to where we needed to get.

As we were trying out single Maclerans (and others), suddenly a devious thought popped into my head! We tried each stroller again with DD6 sitting in it but this time we put DD4 in her lap! :rolleyes1 Over 90 lbs and all 3 Maclarens still pushed effortlessly! Other brands, not too well.

As we got back in the car, I told the girls that I would shop on-line for a Maclaren single (most likely the Volo). When Daddy was at WDW with us, we would each push a stroller. DD4 would sit in the Combi and DD6 would sit in the Maclaren. When Daddy left, we would leave the Combi in the room and DD4 would sit in the Maclaren and DD6 would walk. For those desperate times that DD6 was too tired to walk, they could share. We would check in the Combi for the flight home and keep the Maclaren for the airport to gate check.

And that's my stroller saga and the decision I made.

I know that many out there my not agree with me and that's fine. But this works for me. No way can I handle even a light double stroller. Like I keep mentioning, I'm very wimpy. DD6 is capable of walking but ocassionally gets tired too especially when she sees her sister being pampered. For those times it's nice to have the option of a stroller that can handle additional weight so that I don't have to listen to constant whining or deal with a cranky meltdown. Both DDs have used umbrellas for years and haven't used the seat belts in ages. We don't push them at break-neck paces. Is there a danger in doing this? I'm sure there is. But there is a danger in them running and falling down too. So, I guess I'm willing to take such a calculated risk.

Yes, we will also be over the weight limit of the stroller if we do this consistently. We do plan to bring 2 strollers, so doubling up will only happen when I'm alone with the girls. Both DD's are over the weight limit on the cheap umbrella strollers and have been for quite some time and we still got at least 3 years out of them so I'm not too worried about the Maclaren. So, it may shorten the life of the stroller but we are at the end of our strollers years. When it bites the dust, no more strollers at all. But I have a feeling it will be going strong until DD4 outgrows strollers altogether!

Hopes this helps someone out there in a similar situation. Hopefully a double will work for you but the bottom line is you really need to go to the store and try it out! Reading about it on-line helps but is not the same. Nothing worse then buying and then hating or not even using that "perfect" stroller.

OK, I am WAY past the stroller stage, so I will let the others flame you for any "safety" issues, LOL, but I did want to say I have seen strollers (and just attachments for strollers) that have a step type area behind the seated child that was for an older child to stand and be pushed along with the younger child. My friends have had those and loved them--the ease with which the older child can step on and off when tired--and with your two, perhaps they could trade off who sits and who stands? I know you have now already made your choice, but wanted to tell you about this option if it hadn't come up before. BTW, I think if you are happy with your choice, don't worry about what others say! I'm sure you will have a great time! :)

Thanks for the suggestion! I did consider this but the step itself seems kind of expensive, we could buy a separate stroller for the money. DD4 will never stand! :earseek: I am usually with DH and so, we can each push a stroller. My being on my own is very rare but may increase as the kids get older.

DD6 usually does walk especially if we travel with other kids her age (my young cousins) because they like to walk together. But DD4 is a lazy bum and when we travel alone, DD6 likes to sit too BECAUSE her wimpy sister gets to. :rolleyes1

But my MAIN concern with the strollers with the step attached was the weight of the stroller itself. There doesn't seem to be a way to attach a step to a light weight umbrella stroller - or is there? I may reconsider the attached step if I can attach one to a Maclaren! Hmmm...

Basically, any stroller over 20 lbs is out for me. I'm use to those light weight umbrellas. My Combi is 8 lbs. The Maclaren Quest is nice but I can really tell the 2-3 lbs weight difference between that and the Volo. And I'm leaning toward the lighter weight over the additional features such as recline that we don't really need.

I will get the 2005 Volo model with the canopy even though it's probably "slightly heavier" because I like that feature though.

So if anyone can tell me definitively whether a step can be attached to a Maclaren (because DD6 is 54 lbs) umbrella stroller, I would be very appreciative. Thanks!

chamonix,
I'm looking into the step thing and it seems that a "buggy board" can attach to an umbrella stroller!

Anyone use one on an umbrella? Is it easy to take off and attach? I assume it has to be remove in order to fold the stroller.

yes, the buggy board attaches to umbrella strollers, they are made for them (the kiddy board is for strollers with an axel). i use mine all the time attached to my maclaren vogue! just keep in mind that you'll have to take it off (5 seconds) and hold it if you get on a bus/tram. it's not the on/off, that's the easy part, but if you've got 2 kids you might not have 2 hands to hold it  i know i don't!

I also bought the Maclaren Volo for my DD 6/12 who will have just turned 7 when we go to Disney. I am very impressed with this stroller and am happy I got it. Beats a rental everyday and costs me the same. (I have the 2004 model I got on a great sale. It does not have the canopy, but in November I am not too concerned. If she were walking she would have the same sun :sunny: on her head-I will use a hat if needed.) Maybe your DD's could take turns riding in this Volo after your husband leaves. That way they wont have to ride on top of each other all the time. (I know my 2 youngest would have never done that- they like to pick at each other WAY TOO much!). Whatever works for you will be the best thing-- have a GREAT time!!

How tall is you DD? I'm thinking of doing the same for my almost 7 yo for ou Sept trip. But have been worried her knees will hit her chin.

Thanks for sharing--I love hearing all the stroller ideas and tips and stories; it really does help a lot!

I have to say that your plan sounds good for your situation.
For my boys (3 and 5) it would definitely not work! They would be picking at each other constantly, being so close together! They get along beautifully as long as they are not within arm's reach of each other!

BTW we have two Volos that we use at Disney. I call them my heavenly strollers--I LOVE them! We don't use strollers anymore at all except for Disney but they are wonderful there. My almost-6-year-old DS is 43 pounds and the Volo still pushes like a dream. If DH or I is alone with the kids for a while in the parks or wherever we just take one Volo and the kids take turns in it.

Have fun!

Not a flame, but I watched the neighbor kid fall on his back end when the much too small stroller collapsed under him - he wasn't hurt, but there were peices of twisted metal he could have gotten hurt on.

Just be aware, there are reasons the stroller has weight limits.

I see why you arrived at your decision, but I'm picturing you with both your tired girls (because your older DD won't want to ride until she's tired anyway, right?) and being hot and sticky. Will your DDs really want to be that close together? I have boys, and my older one would be grouchy to have the younger one sit on his lap, and no way would the younger want to do that. Just saying, it may work in the store but not in the parks. Still your best solution though it sounds like...I guess if the older DD doesn't like it, she can walk, huh?!

Good luck!

Thanks for the warning. I do appreciate it.

I did check out those buggy boards things and are considering them for future "IF" DD6.5 will still need to "rest her feet," :rolleyes1 and I venture off on my own again with just the kids. But since DH or someone else (like Mom) usually travels with me, we will usually have a second stroller pusher anyways.

For this next trip I will only be on my own for about 4-5 days - 1 day of travel. Didn't want another piece of equipment to have to deal with.

DD6.5 was still sitting in the 35 lbs limit umbrella stroller this past April! :earseek: And while the stroller was still in great shape, it was almost impossible to push!

I do agree that there's a weight limit for a reason on strollers. I, too, have seen some pretty scarey over-loaded strollers where if it fell or collapsed, there could have been some serious injury. I've actualy seen children riding ONTOP of the canopy of the Disney rental strollers!!!! :earseek: Or kids sitting onto of the canopy during parades and fireworks. Now that I think is extremely dangerous!

I admit that I am probably taking a calculated risk by "overloading" the Volo when necessary. It's an umbrella stroller. I do believe the fabric would riip before anything else broke. It's pretty close to the ground. Lol! Yes, I'm just "justifying to myself." Personally I just think one of girls would get a bigger boo-boo when I dropped she after she whines me into carrying her! I did mention I was a wimp, right?

But DD6.5 will usually walk and hopefully they can take turns sitting. But knowing DD4 who NEVER likes to walk, I just wanted to make sure I had an option when both girls were tired and little Miss Lazy doesn't want to take her turn walking! And I don't intend to add 20 lbs of shopping bags and gear to the stroller either!

Even with 90 lbs the Volo was very easy to push and didn't look overloaded and straining at all. Of course, there's always a chance that looks can be deceiving and the whole thing will collapse on us! :earseek: There's no sharp metal underneath them, just the criss cross support, and it's pretty low to the ground. I guess that there is the possibilty of them getting scraped up IF the stroller collapses. They've had scrapes from playing in the park or riding their bikes. I, personally think the chances of the stroller breaking are very remote and am willing to risk it. I do understand that many people are not and respect that for their family.

HappyMom2 & Amy,

Good points! At this point, doubling up seems like fun to them. :confused3

While they do have their squabbles, for the most part, they love playing together and being together. Sometimes at home I find them cuddling up on the soda watching tv. The younger one sometimes even lies on top of the older one and uses her as a big body pillow. It's the funniest thing to see. They share one chair when playing on the computer even when there is 2 perfectly good chairs available. You get the picture.

Although, there are ALWAYS those days where they can't even stand to LOOK at each other! :confused3

DH and I no longer do commando style. I definitely won't be doing that on mine own. I figure 2 hours of park time a day, some sit down meals at some "fun" restaurants, if they are willing, lots of pool, playground, and community hall time.

If they start fighting over the stroller, I'm not opposed to popping in a DVD and staying in the room! Although, I have a feeling that they will be better behaved if I take them out then keeping them in. My kids are the types that are angels in public but can be little devils at home!

And as you said, there's always walking!

DD6.5 is almost 49" in her shoes. She does have very long legs. She has a relatively small head like me so most of her length is in her body.

DD4 is a munchkin like me - she's only 40". She has a relatively big head (think bobblehead) so her body is on the short side.

So, yes, I'm short and I have a small head!

When the 2 of them is side by side they look like more than 27 months apart. Even though they are "only" about 9" apart, it seems like more if you measure the distances from the shoulders.

My advice is to try it at the store. Beside weight and height, I think the way the child's weight is distributed makes certain strollers more uncomfortable than others.

trayletha,
My DD (almost 7) is 45 inches tall. She is small for her age, and fits nicely in the volo. Blessedby3

In addition to the buggy boards, there's something called the Litaf Seat 2 go. I bought one and it attatches to my Combi ultra savvy just fine. It is a bit bulky though and you do have to take it apart to fold up the stroller unlike the buggy board. The nice part is though, your daughter could actually sit down or stand.

If you go to babyenterprise(dot)com (sorry, can't post links yet) and do a search you can see a picture of it.

Hope this helps!

Wow! I can't believe kids are still in strollers at 6 yo! My DD hasn't ridden since age 3, and I doubt I could contain her like that if I wanted to! Good luck with all that pushing, sounds like you are doing all the work. Lucky for me, we plan to travel with Grandma for our DDs (nearly 5 and 18 mths) next spring, so there will be many breaks and the not quite 5 yo will have no problem walking.

Enjoy your trip.... :sunny:

there are lots of reasons why kids are in strollers at that age.

My son is nearly 6 and has a problem with one of his feet, that means he gets very tired quickly. he is unable to walk long distances (although his foot is improving as he gets older..) BUT, you wouldnt know from looking at him.

Because of his foot issues, he has never really walked long distances.. and to go from that, to walking 5 or 6 miles a day... it just wouldnt work.

PLUS, we like the fact that he is "contained" and doesnt run around. I guess it depends on your kid. He is never allowed to run around in busy spaces, he has to hold someones hand or hold onto his stroller.. thats the deal. In many ways... having him in the stroller is easier.

of course, when there is space and not so many people around.. he can run! And is encouraged to..

To the OP.. Im intreiged why you didnt just hire a double stroller for your girls? they are so light to push and convenient in that you dont need a stroller out of the parks.

DD6 never sits in a stroller and hasn't for at least 2-3 years EXCEPT at WDW. Go figure. :confused3 I think it is a combination of all the other kids in strollers, the huge amount of ground to cover, the Florida heat which contributes to fatigue, the amount of people (sitting in a stroller feels more secure) and most of all her younger sister gets to sit like the Queen of Sheba so why shouldn't she? :rolleyes1

Miss Lazy, umm, I mean DD4, is NOT a walker - not at WDW, not anywhere. Walking to her is a waste of time and energy - she would rather store that energy up to play and run around. When whe's not sitting in the stroller, she is constantly in motion. In fact other than the stroller, she's hardly ever sitting. My mom says that DD4 has a "pointy butt" because she can't ever sit still! Lol! If there was no stroller for her, she would (pretend to) be REALLY sleepy and want to be held by any moving adult because ... she...just...can't...move...even...one...more...step...zzzz

DD4 is very independent and thinks SHE's the boss - of everyone else. So she's always the leader and not a follower. DD6 will walk nicely and follow you and keep you in her sights at all times (as I do her). But not DD4 - she charges ahead and thinks that it is our jobs to follow her. :earseek: It only takes a split second to lose sight of someone at WDW even if they are only 10 yards away from you. So, even if DD4 was willing to walk (which she won't) , I feel more secure knowing that she is sitting rather than worrying that she will take off any second.

Yes, we did think about the double stroller park rental for the second half of our trip. But $16-18 times 4 days was about $64-72 and I still wouldn't have a stroller outside the parks or at the airport. And if we had to rent for the entire trip, we were talking about $16 times 12 days = $192!! :earseek:

But the bottom line is that we DO need a stroller out of the parks. We are staying at the BWV and the walk to Epcot and MGM is so convenient but too long for the kids to walk. Also, rentals last only for that one trip/day. Buying will last multiple trips.

To be honest when we are at the MK or MGM, we leave the stroller in one stroller parking area and hit multiple rides without retrieving the stroller. The girls are fine walking then because the distances are shorter and they know where they are going next.

We retrieve the strollers and push the girls when we travel to other lands or areas of the park and when we are coming into or going out of the park. That's when we are moving at the a faster pace that the girls will tire out at (NOT at a break neck pace running over people! Lol!) and when we want to keep track of the girls without them lagging behind or slowing us down and when they get more tired because they are bored/anxious/cranky since they aren't doing anything, just walking.

So, we can live without a stroller in certain areas of the parks. Although having the kids in the stroller when traveling among the crowds and around the parks feel more secure. It is getting into and out of the parks and to and from the buses and/or hotels where the stroller comes in handy the most for us.
