Decided to Cross Over to the Darkside

I don't recommend to families who have some smaller who will feel left out and who don't have people who enjoy roller coasters.

The parks aren't kid friendly (and yes I'm aware of the Zeus Landing area but that obviously pales in comparison to Fantasyland)

Universal is not a big draw for my family as my kids are not really thrill riders.

This whole "Universal is about thrill rides" thing is so bizarre to me. It's one thing coming from people who have never been there - but from people who have been there...?

Yes, Universal has more thrill rides than Disney World. But, come on, that is setting the bar pretty low. Our state fair has more thrill rides than Disney World.

Universal has a few big coasters, but it also has tons of themed rides, kid-themed lands in both parks, kid-themed shows, a play area just for kids, character meet and greets. Yes, it has fewer rides that babies can ride. But it is still a theme park, not a coaster park.

Oh but you know, these two will be first on the list to tell you that that VAST majority of people LOVE FP+ and there are only 3 or 6 or 12 people here on the DIS that don't like it and are overly vocal about it and make it SEEM like people aren't enjoying FP+...

Good post OP, glad you voiced your concerns, they seem fair, and if our May Trip isn't as enjoyable as the last have been, it will be the of WDW for us as well. We are a little locked in though as we rented DVC and bought APs last spring ...

I won't say that at all. What I will say is that this is the "Theme Parks Attractions and Strategies sub-forum. This is not the place for this type of post that is already littered with a lot of the same posts.

Also - I really enjoy Universal. I'm sure the OP will love it. I am by no means saying she is wrong for his/her thoughts and opinions.

And it's bizarre that someone can't have an opposing opinion. I've been to Universal several times. It's not a place I would bring a young child to. It's Busch Gardens + Harry Potter plopped in Orlando. For me it's purely a teen/adults only destination.

It's as simple as this many people don't like change. period.

Time, and the way people remember it, is a funny thing. We've been to WDW many times, and I do things like time how long it take me to get from point A to point B. Yet whenever I post how long it actually takes, I usually get castigated by folks who insist my times are too high. I assure you, I am a quick walker.

I think when many folks complain about 3fp, they are not factoring all the time it took to collect old FP, and how much mental energy it took to coordinate old FP. There were LOTS of times, we'd walk all the way to a FP kiosk just to discover: FP were gone for the day, or the FP return window would not work.

Now you ARRIVE with a FP on your band. (Unless you are one of the folks who needs to go to he kiosk upon park entry. If you are in that category, then you will spend approx. 20-30minutes getting them- depends how long the line is...could be more could be less. that was the estimated wait on MLKjr weekend.)

Also, previously, the FP return line was not immediate. Soarin' waits are historically quite long, even with a FP. With FP+, our waits were mostly under five minutes. (Though we skipped Soarin' this time around.)

A third factor is the advantage of the wristbands all day. That one is harder to measure, but I know the idiots used to annoy me. You know, the folks who get to the front of the line and STILL have their KTTW card still in their wallet. The folks who could not figure out how to use the old turnstiles, the folks who did not have their cards out during emh. The new bands make it easier to access your hotel room when your holding two coffee, when you go to the pool or water parks, and any time when you might otherwise have put your ticket or wristband in your pocket/wallet.

So Yes, FP+ does = change. he gain of FP+ is that you don't spend any time obtaining FP, or trying to obtain FP. Instead, the trade off is that once your FP+ are used, you do trade some of the time gain time in standby lines. For us, I'm confident that we came out ahead.

My two points of comparison are also not equal. My most recent visit was during a fairly busy time. My most recent pre FP+ visits were during relatively low crowd times. Even still, I'd say the new FP+ was a gain.

The only [part of the new system I really hate is the idea that ALL TS meals are now cc holds. That is a loss. I will no longer book arrival day ADR's, will reduce our ADR's, and will trade 180 day ADR's for same day ADR's. (more GF Café and less 1900PF)

Look up old threads on almost ANY change WDW has made in the last five years and you will find LOTS of naysayers. try reading a few posts about the Epcot giant wand, or the change in stroller rental pricing. Now, most of us actually happy that there are less of those giant plastic behemoths clogging walkways in WDW.

It's ok if people don't like the MB/FP+. Really.

Just because you do doesn't mean their opinion is any less valid than yours.

OP, I hope you and your family have a great time at Universal. :)

Please don't apologize. They chose to read your thread. They could have moved on if they weren't interested.

I chose to read it because I happen to be leaning in the direction you are going. I want to read posts like yours. I do not want to wade through pages of posts arguing back and forth from the same posters.

Thank you for posting. :thumbsup2

Oh, I don't think that was a real apology. :rotfl:

In any case, everyone's entitled to make any post they like, about any topic they like.

I happen to adore both Universal and Disney (including FP+ Disney, which has worked out great for our touring style). I'm planning trips to both this year and next. I think the OP will have a wonderful time at Universal!

The Universal boards here are terrifically helpful.

It is going to take much more time and mental effort to preplan our FP+s than it did to collect FPs as we walked through the park and pulled them from where they were most convenient. I have already spent more time planning this and I still don't even pick my FP+s for another 20 days. For us, it took no time or mental energy to collect old FPs. Perhaps the only exception would be walking to Soarin before heading to TT, though if we RDd we would ride that SB at the same time anyway, so even that didn't "waste" time.

It gets even worse in larger groups.

The FP line was dang near immediate on all rides in our experience, I think you are right that Soarin was the longest wait, I think once we waited like 15 mins, or course, as the FP wait increased, the SB increased exponentially the wait that day was 2 hours. Though I think you are overstating this.

Yea so, despite suggesting others are recolouring history, it looks to me like you are doing the same, though perhaps even worse.

We were originally planning to go to our first trip to Universal and a side trip to Disney this year. However with the new Harry Potter attraction opening up, and the fast pass+, we have changed our minds and are going to go to the beach this year instead.

I am hoping we can go to Universal and Disney in 2015 and maybe all the crowds will have died down a little at Universal. The more I read about it, I am not sure that Fast Pass+ will affect our trip as much as I originally thought. We are rope droppers so I believe we will just get our fast passes for evening when we come back after supper. And we will no longer park hop. :thumbsup2

I don't think we would ever not do Disney at all....however we will see how it goes.

We're doing WDW in the fall too and hope to do rope drop and book our fastpasses in the evening as well. I'm starting to see this strategy in so many plans that it is making me wonder how easy it will be to get those late fastpasses when everyone is in the system.

Thanks for all of the replies. i will always be a fan of Disney even if i don't agree with all of their decisions. I will keep monitoring Disboards and DH will look at Twitter to see what is happening with FP+... hopefully there will be positive developments! My family would love to go back!

I'm hard on Universal because we feel like we threw our money away there, but to be fair, we were only on the IOA side. The other side does sound more fun. We were trying to see the Harry Potter section so opted for IOA with the one day we had to spare.

We don't need another "we're not going" thread. There's already a bunch of them. Why didn't you respond to one of those threads instead of creating a brand new thread with the exact same topic.

On the first page I saw 2 threads already started about this topic.

With all due respect, go back and count up how many "Just returned and we loved FP+" threads there are on the first couple of pages. Those folks have every right to start their own threads explaining their reasons for loving FP+, and the OP has every right to start his/her own thread about their reasons for taking their business elsewhere. Now, would it be a crazy idea for the Mods to start merging all the positive threads into one big love-fest and merging all the "I'm never going back" threads into one big gripe session? Probably not. But unless and until they do, let's not discourage anyone, on either side of the debate, from speaking their mind.

This!

Pretty sure you didn't need to click on this post and respond to it multiple times. :confused3

My teenage son loves US/IOA. He's a big roller coaster fan. My daughter thinks it is ok but she not a huge theme park fan at all so that's high praise from her. LOL

I don't ride roller coaster usually but I still enjoy US/IOA. I've found plenty to like there. I'm planning on taking a day on my next solo disney trip to check out the new stuff I haven't seen yet.

The resorts are really nice and I definitely enjoy staying onsite there and enjoying the unlimited express pass.

I think you'll have alot of fun. :thumbsup2

Good for you. That wasn't our experience. And of course I complained; unlike most people on these boards we want our problems resolved before we head home.
No reason to be snide. I was trying to be sympathetic but never mind.

I feel the same way. :)

Heading down in three days to test out this fiasco. If it's anything like we anticipate, we are becoming Potter fans as well:confused3

OP- I bet your kids like Universal better than Disney anyhow...it will be you who misses WDW. At least that is how it is with my family. Did UO for the first time last year and my boys thought it was a lot more fun than WDW. The rides were much edgier and more thrilling for them. It was me who missed WDW...partly for sentimental reasons but also the vibe is a lot classier in Disney. But kids care about neither of these :)

Oh, and please don't pay attention to the rude people who questioned your posting. That's what a *forum* is for and if you don't like it just move on. I find it so rude when people who don't like an opinion try to make a poster look foolish.

We were planning to come to the Motherland in July but I just can't wrap my head around FP+. This is not the way we vacation. Three FP's is not enough... the tiers are just crazy, and I have a feeling the lines will not be any better (if not worse) by the summer.

Look, we love Disney and have spent many great vacations (and lots of $$$) there... but we only take one big family vacation a year so we have to make it count. I'm sure no one is going to care that we are going to Universal (and one less family will make the lines shorter for some else!) however, I really do hope that Disney gets this FP+ situation sorted so we can go back! (I know.... some people love it... but I don't like the way it stands now and will not be back...)

have a great trip!

Chances are, you will find that there is no fiasco at WDW. Most people criticizing and claiming they are DONE have not actually used the system.

I have been to Universal and thought it was okay. It's an upscale Six Flags.
